  4. Introduction ICSI stands for intracytoplasmic sperm injection. ICSI may be used as part of an IVF treatment. In normal IVF cycle, many sperms are placed together with an egg, in the hope that one of the sperm will enter and fertilize the egg. With ICSI, the embryologist takes a single sperm and injects it directly into an egg. For this, a specialized ICSI machine is used. ICSI helps to improve fertilization rates when semen parameters are compromised and the chances of fertilization otherwise are reduced.

  5. What is Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection Treatment? While ICSI is categorized as an in vitro fertilization procedure, it is comparatively different from IVF. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection treatment is a procedure in which a single sperm cell is injected into the cytoplasm of the female egg. This procedure aids with the fusing of gametes or male and female reproductive cells, through which an embryo may be obtained, which is then transferred to the uterus to be carried to term.

  6. The Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection Treatment Procedure The first step in the Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection treatment procedure is the collection of sperm. Sperm is likely to be self-generated in the home or clinical environment and submitted to a fertility clinic to commence with the Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection treatment. Surgical options are also likely to be explored wherein an incision is made in the testes to extract sperm cells. While sperm cells are collected, the egg is also collected using Follicle Stimulating Hormone to facilitate a state of superovulation for the generation of several eggs at once.

  7. After a week, eggs are checked for maturity and estrogen levels are monitored as well. In a little more than two weeks, when eggs have matured sufficiently, they are removed from the ovary using an ultrasound- guided needle intended for this purpose. Each egg is then fused with sperm cells collected prior, with the procedure being repeated for every egg collected. Once fertilization takes place, and a healthy embryo is formed, the embryo is then transferred to the uterus and is often carried to term, resulting in childbirth.

  8. Why Opt for Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection Treatment? ICSI treatment is used in various instances of male infertility, including: ● Low sperm count or Oligospermia. ● Teratozoospermia, a condition defined by abnormally shaped sperms. ● Asthenozoospermia, a condition known to slow down sperm movement. ● Combination cases of Teratozoospermia and Asthenozoospermia, also known as Teratoasthenozooazospermia. ● Combination cases of Teratozoospermia and Oligospermia, also known as Oligoasthenoteratozoospermia or OATS.

  9. The Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection treatments route is also often taken by fertility specialists when: ● When sperm is produced but not present in the ejaculate, yet evident in hormonal tests, sperm is retrieved from the testes through testicular sperm aspiration (TESA or TESE) procedures. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection treatments usually follows up TESE or TESA procedures to fertilize healthy sperms retrieved from the testes. ● Retrograde ejaculation procedures in which sperms are derived from a male’s urine are often followed up by Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to fertilize retrieved sperms. ● Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection treatments is often the follow up to failed IVF procedures.
