Compostable Garbage Bag: A Baby Step Against Pollution

Compostable garbage bags contribute not only to the reduction of pollution caused by plastic bags but also to the carbon emission that results from the production of plastic bags. Spreading the use of them is a contributing factor to the collective effort towards minimizing environmental pollution.

  1. Compostable Garbage Bag: A Baby Step Against Pollution Humans, being the most intelligent animal, have attained the ability to change their surroundings and innovative substances to improve their standard of living. Plastic is one of them, which plays a prime role in everyday life; most objects like cellphones, kitchen wares, clothes, and food-packaging materials contain plastic. According to a 2019 study, the rate of global plastic production has increased to 460 million tons per year. The commodities also include garbage bags. Since the widespread applications of plastics, plastic garbage bags for municipal and industrial waste management are in use. With the development of compostable garbage bags, awareness is spreading gradually. Let us first understand synthetic plastic and its effects. You need to know what synthetic plastic does Synthetic plastics are polymers synthesized from respective monomers' chemical reactions under controlled conditions. They cannot be broken down into smaller fragments by the action of living systems like microbes. Low energy requirements in production, low maintenance, corrosion resistance, lightness, and durability are responsible for their widespread use. Plastics end up in one of three fates: recycling, landfills, and the environment. All synthetic plastics eventually degrade through physicochemical processes to variable degrees. Physicochemical processes include weathering and oxidation/hydrolysis. Sunlight, wind, and waves are the factors that mediate withering. These degradation processes finally yield microscopic particles of plastic materials called microparticles. Followed by their entry into the environment, microparticles find their way to drinking water and the food chain. Microparticles interrupt various enzyme systems involved in physiological processes. It eventually leads to diseases that affect the quality of life. They are affecting the marine ecosystem, claiming millions of aquatic lives annually.

  2. Compostable garbage bag: a wise alternative Biodegradable garbage bags are made of plastics that can be decomposed by microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi. In contrast, compostable garbage bags are biodegradable bags that yield nontoxic biomass after decomposition, with the byproducts of carbon dioxide, water, methane, and other inorganic compounds. Usually, the composting is carried out in controlled conditions of temperature and humidity.

  3. Biodegradable trash bags of volumetric capacities ranging from 5L to 240L are available in different colors. Despite their susceptibility to microbial actions, they have long shelf life during which exposure to microbes does not distort them. Biodegradable yard waste bags used to compile wet or degradable wastes generated from domestic applications do not require their separation before the waste processing steps at treatment plants. Conclusion Compostable garbage bags contribute not only to the reduction of pollution caused by plastic bags but also to the carbon emission that results from the production of plastic bags. Spreading the use of them is a contributing factor to the collective effort towards minimizing environmental pollution.
