  1. COMPREHENSION MAIN IDEA

  2. THE MAIN IDEA • The main idea is the central point or thought the author wants to communicate to you the reader. This main idea connects the sentences in the paragraph.

  3. THE MAIN IDEA • This main idea is the “big point” which oftentimes the reader will find by looking at the title. • For example, a passage titled: “Why Students Should Have Less Homework” will include reasons for this idea.

  4. WHAT IS THE POINT IN THIS PARAGRAPH? Read the paragraph below: Engineers create wealth for society. So, tennis is a game and the resources of the earth are scarce. Have you gone mad? Thus the only solution is to educate the public on being socially responsible. Did what you read make sense?

  5. What did you notice? The paragraph didn’t make sense because it didn’t have a MAIN IDEA. We would go crazy if texts were written like this all the time. • It was difficult to understand because it was made of different ideas that were not connected. There was no common thread in the paragraph.

  6. THE MAIN IDEA • The main idea is the heart of the paragraph or text. • It is the controlling idea • All the other supporting details in the text or within a paragraph should tell us more about the main idea.

  7. Ask yourself: • WHO or WHAT is the passage about

  8. TOPIC SENTENCE • Many paragraphs have topic sentences that indicate the main idea. • These topic sentences are usually at the beginning or end of the paragraph. • You should note though that a main idea doesn’t always have to be stated or expressed but it can be implied or suggested.

  9. SUPPORTING DETAILS These details prove the value of the main idea. Therefore, supporting details explain the main idea in the form of examples, facts, descriptions, explanations or any form of evidence.

  10. CAN YOU IDENTIFY THE MAIN IDEA AND SUPPORTING DETAILS? • Homeless people have many problems. In winter, it’s hard to stay warm and it gets too hot in summer. It’s also hard to keep things safe without a home. Worst there is the lack of privacy.

  11. CAN YOU IDENTIFY THE MAIN IDEA AND SUPPORTING DETAILS? “Winter provides the opportunity for many outdoor activities. Many people enjoy ice skating on a pond. Swimming in the pond in summer can also be fun. Skiing can be a thrilling experience too. After a new snowfall, you can even build a snowman!”

  12. HERE IS ANOTHER WAY YOU CAN REMEMBER MAIN IDEA AND SUPPORTING DETAILS
