  1. Using FFP2 and FFP3 Masks for Effective Protection against Covid-19

  2. Masks are protection against transmission of microorganisms even though it is not a comprehensive strategy alone. There are various types of masks and respirators available in the market, ranging from simple surgical masks to N95 or FFP2 and FFP/3 masks. • Usually, surgical masks are loosely fitted over the user's face and protect the wearer from microorganism transmission while conducting surgery or working in medical environments.

  3. On the other hand, N95, FFP2, and FFP3 masks are used to counter airborne particles. These masks must fit tightly to the user's face and provides maximum protection against internal leakage. • These masks have pores with diameter 100 times smaller than one used by surgical masks and ideal for protection against acute SARS-CoV-2 virus.

  4. Usage of Masks during Covid-19 • During the Covid-19 pandemic, there have been various recommendations on how to use or which type of mask to use.

  5. Views have been divergent, with some organizations recommending masks in both low-risk and high-risk situations. The use of surgical masks in low-risk cases and respirators in high-risk scenarios has been recommended by World Health Organization • For medical professionals grappling with Covid positive patients, protection for them needs to be foolproof.

  6. Surveys have that nearly 10 % of medical professionals were getting affected with Covid-19 when using surgical masks compared to zero infection for those using N95 and FFP2 Mask and FFp3 mask. • Masks alone are not enough to suppress transmission and save lives. They are a part of the overall strategy used to combat Covid-19.

  7. Do and don’ts during Covid-19 If one's community is affected by Covid-19, one can stay safe by taking simple precautions such as: • Maintaining physical distancing • Wear an FFP2 or FFP3 mask • Keeping hands clean with frequent washing with soap and water • Coughing into a tissue or bent elbow • Keeping rooms well ventilated.

  8. Basics of how to use a mask • When wearing or taking off the mask or one should clean their hands properly. • Masks should be worn properly. It should cover the nose, mouth, and chin. • After taking off the mask, one should avoid keeping it in the open.

  9. Store it in a clean plastic bag, or wash it if it is a reusable fabric mask. Disposable masks should be trashed in a dustbin. • Avoid using masks with valves. • In countries like the UK, where only FFP2 and FFP3 face masks are allowed, the demand has been massive. With different variants of transmissible Covid-19 circulating, people feel the need to have extra protection.

  10. To understand how FFP2 or FFP3 face masks in UK additional protection compared to cloth masks, the level of air filtration protection needs to be understood. A cloth mask with or without double-ply filtration protection efficiency varies from 35% to 70%. The FFP2 Mask provides 94 % protection, and the FFP3 mask is the most effective at 99%. • FFP3 masks are the best protection and should be used by all medical professionals to protect them from SARS-CoV-2 transmission.
