Objectives Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to: Identify the educational benefits of video as an instructional strategy List several effective teaching practices to implement when utilizing video as an instructional tool Discuss the importance of a specific learning activity for utilizing video, that engages students and empowers faculty and students to assess if learning is taking place

  4. Preparation • Take one minute to reflect on the following: • State an assumption you have about learning with video. • Identify what informs that assumption (data, values, experience, etc.) • Partner with the person sitting next to you and share your assumption and reason(s).

  6. Are you ready . . . . Grab your glasses and LET’s GO! Your virtual WebQuest is waiting for you!

  7. Going on a Virtual WebQuest • Form three groups • Team 1: Factual Team 2: Demonstration Team 3: Case Story/Case Study • Read and select a role from the WebQuest handout • Embark on your virtual WebQuest • Within the scope of your role, visit several “websites” and select an informational card • Educate your group colleagues on what you have learned • Construct a teaching activity utilizing video as an instructional tool that considers the perspectives of all group roles • Share the teaching activity with the workshop

Review: Benefits • Instructional video is an enhancing and enriching resource • Focus • Introduce concept(s) • Clarity of concept(s) • Reinforce concept(s) • Historical perspective • Journeys into worlds that cannot otherwise be visited (i.e. nature, microscopic, space, abstract, etc.) • Experiences outside the class (museums, other countries, different cultures, etc.) • Enhances printed materials • Understanding of complex issues

Learning with Video • Should support learning objectives • Supporting activities are opportunities to evaluate student learning and assess students’ ability to critically reflect on, synthesize, and apply information. • Active learning assignments includes asking students to • 1) reflect on interesting and/or significant points • 2) summarize important concepts • 3) connect or apply concepts to real world or current events • Evaluation strategies can take many forms.
