  1. Supreme Court judge removes controversial remarks about Sikkimese-Nepalese 08 February, 2023 The remarks describing Sikkimese-Nepalese as “people of foreign origin,” made by the Supreme Court in its judgment passed in the Association of Old Settlers of Sikkim vs Union of India case were removed today. This remark resulted in a huge protest in Sikkim showing a strong objection of the Sikkimese-Nepalese community against the remark in the judgment. The judgment was passed by a two-judge bench including Justices BV Nagarathna and MR Shah, whereas the controversy arose due to the portion of the judgment authored by Justice Nagarathna. She stated, “Therefore, there was no difference made out between the original inhabitants of Sikkim, namely the Bhutia-Lepchas and the persons of foreign origin settled in Sikkim like the Nepalis or persons of Indian origin who settled down in Sikkim generations back.” Also Read: Legal Articles
