  2. Objectives • Explain the hazards associated with hydraulics systems. • Identify the meaning of safety symbols, colors, and words. • List nine safety precautions to follow when working with hydraulic systems.

  4. Marks • Lines—Hose or pipe connections • Arrows, arrowheads—Direction of hydraulic fluid flow • Arcs—variable flow

  5. Safety Precautions for Working With Hydraulics, 1 of 4 • 1. Avoid fluid contact with skin and eyes. Fluid leaks, disconnected lines or reservoir drains can cause severe burns since its temperature will likely be over 100 degrees. Some hydraulic fluids can irritate or burn when they come in contact with skin or eyes • 2. Be aware that pin-hole leaks in high pressure circuits can release fluids which can penetrate the skin and lead to the loss of limb, infection or death.

Relieve trapped pressure by loosening lines and compononets in a circuit slowly. Accidental release of trapped fluid in hydraulic circuits supporting equipment may cause these components to malfunction, leak down or fall suddenly

  7. Safety Precautions, 3 of 4 • 5. Avoid heat and flames. Many hydraulic fluids are flammable and should be kept away from open flames or heat • 6. Avoid excessive pressure or resistance to flow. Components and hoses subjected to excessive and prolonged pressure may explode or wear faster

  8. Safety Precautions, 4 of 4 • 7. Operate all control levers to insure hydraulic pressure has been relieved when preparing to work in a system • 8. Avoid operating equipment with malfunctioning components or with leaks • 9. Observe normal shop safety practices including the wearing of safety glasses and safety helmets, keeping fluid off the floor etc.,
