  1. Guide to Pass Your Resume Through ATS

  2. What is ATS? • Applicant Tracking System (ATS) collects thousands of resumes from an online form and conduct analysis according to the job profile. • If it passes the ATS, the resume then goes in the hands of real recruiters. • But submitting an online application can feel like throwing a dart in the dark. You don’t know where to aim or where it’ll go. • The majority of application never even make it to the hands of a human. They’re just stored in an ATS. Your carefully crafted applications are reviewed by bots!

  3. The companies are moving towards the automated process in recruitment right from screening the resumes. • They have started adopting ATS because of its efficiency. • Instead of a human reading each and every resume manually, an ATS can store thousands of applications in its database and can scan through the keywords and criteria in minutes. • Thus, to pass the ATS test, you need to write your application the way it wants. • Here’s everything you need to do for optimizing your resume and beating the bots…

  4. Keep a Simple Format • While you might want to be creative with your application by highlighting the important points or awards, ATS want it all simple. • Therefore, you need to delete all those extra touches like logos, pictures, symbols, shading, etc. • Stick to the standard resume format with a font like Arial, Times Roman, or Courier, in case ATS can’t read fancy fonts. • Only include qualifications, hard skills, education and experience and send it in a word or rich text format instead of a PDF as ATS can miss important points in PDF.

  5. ATS wants Specific Keywords • For the application to rank higher, use the exact same keywords as mentioned in the job description including plurals, abbreviations and numbers. • Adjusting each and every word according to the ATS takes more time and efforts than sending a general resume, but it’s all worth it • For example- if the job position says “CRM Software”, don’t write “Salesforce” even if it resembles because ATS won’t recognize this. • When it comes to acronyms, use both full-forms and short forms to balance between human and ATS.

  6. Focus More on Hard Skills ATS mainly looks for hard skills when it scans your application. So prioritize them in your application. Focus on the technical skills, credentials, position title, and software or tools that you have knowledge of. These are the keywords that an applicant tracking system would be checking for in your application.

  7. Use a Spell Check • A spelling mistake will be the death of your resume. • While a human reader can at least figure out what you meant before throwing your application into garbage disposal as disapproval, ATS, on the other hand will terminate your resume immediately. No mistakes allowed! • So, if possible, double and triple check your resume before sending it in.

  8. Summary • Once your application passes the unfailing eye of the ATS, you are halfway passed the journey and finally reach to the human eye. • All this advice for optimizing your resume is simply a good resume practice. • So, take time to follow these steps and your application will make it to the hiring manager’s desk and ultimately take you to the interview.
