  2. LataMangeshkarborn as HemaMangeshkar; 28 September 1929 – 6 February 2022) was an Indian playback singer and occasional music composer.

  3. She is widely considered to have been one of the greatest and most influential singers in India. Her contribution to the Indian music industry in a career spanning seven decades gained her honorific titles such as the "Queen of Melody", "Nightingale of India", and "Voice of the Millennium".

  4. LataMangeshkar was the first child of PanditDeenanathMangeshkar and Shevanti (Shudhamati). With her sisters Asha, Usha and Meena also being celebrated vocalists, LataMangeshkar belonged to a family of performers.

  5. She was born as Hema and later renamed as Lata based on a character Latika from one of her father’s plays- BhaawBandhan. Her surname, Mangeshkar, is after a village- Mangeshi in Goa.

  6. She started singing at the age of five. Although Lata spent most of her adult life in Mumbai, she was born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, and spent 16 years of her life in the city. At the age of 5, Lata started acting in her father’s musical plays- SangeetNatak in Marathi. She also played a minor role in the 1st Hindi film by Master Vinayak- Bari Ma in 1945.

  7. LataMangeshkar was the first Indian artiste to perform at the Royal Albert Hall, London.

  8. Her first song was- NaachuYaaGade, KheluSaari Mani HausBhaarifor the Marathi film- KitiHasaal  in the year 1942, however, the song was dropped for some reasons from the final cut.

  9. Her first National Award came for the songs in the movie- Parichay.

  10. When she sang the song- Aye Mere WatanKe Logo on 27 January 1963, it brought tears to the then Prime Minister of Inida- Jawaharlal Nehru. The song was dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives in the 1962 war.

  11. She is the only playback singer after M. S. Subbulakshmi to be awarded with India’s highest civilian award- Bharat Ratna Award.

  12. she appeared in the Guinness World Records which listed her as the most recorded artist in history between 1948 and 1987. She was the member of Parliqament, Rajyasabha

  13. LataMangeshkardidn’t just rule the Hindi film industry; she ruled all over India. Apart from creating legendary songs in Hindi and Urdu, Lataji is said to have recorded music in 36 different Indian languages, from Marathi, Tamil, Bhojpuri, Kannada, Bengali, Assamese — among others. According to estimates, she has sung almost 50000 songs.
