  1. Overview of Acupuncture for Infertility Treatment Acupuncture can be beneficial for your body. It is an ancient Chinese medicine in which fine needles are inserted into the specific points on the skin. Our body channels or 12 crucial meridians (pathways) carry vital energy. This energy must flow freely to keep the body in a good state. When you are stressed out, you feel exhausted and low in energy. Acupuncture helps in retaining energy and makes you feel relaxed. It is a natural way to regain energy without using any drugs or medication. Acupuncture can also be combined with other treatments. Many people benefit from acupuncture to treat infertility. What is infertility? In general words, infertility can be defined as not being able to get pregnant or stay pregnant for longer than one year of unprotected sex. It can happen to people irrespective of gender and there can be many causes of it. Most importantly, infertility is not solely concerned with women. Both of the partners need to be tested for infertility to get the treatment. Does acupuncture work to treat infertility? There is no conclusive evidence that suggests acupuncture doesn’t work to improve fertility. Studies suggest that acupuncture shows great results for infertility in both men and women. It increases blood flow to the uterus which increases the chances of an embryo implant on the uterine wall. It also reduces anxiety and stress as the hormones released due to stress can significantly decrease fertility. Acupuncture balances hormones and the endocrine system that regulates ovulation, especially in women with the polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Acupuncture is recommended for a variety of medical conditions that affect infertility. It includes PCOS, fibroids, endometriosis, and issues with ovarian reserve or sperm quality. It can also help in treating the side effects of fertility drugs. When should I start acupuncture treatment? Patients are advised to start acupuncture 3 months before they start any other treatment such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI). However, make sure to ask your doctor about acupuncture treatment.

  2. What can you expect after the first visit with the acupuncturist? During the first visit, your acupuncturist will ask questions about your lifestyle including diet, stress levels, exercise, and sleep habits. They may also examine your pulse and look at your tongue. The next is acupuncture needle treatment which can last about 30 minutes to one hour. What should be the frequency of treatment? Your acupuncturist will modify the treatments depending upon your condition. Generally, they recommend treatment 1-3 times a week. Each session after the first may last up to an hour. This includes a discussion period and then a 20 to 40 minutes session with needles. Do the needles hurt? Most patients experience little to no pain with the acupuncture needles. Some can experience a mild, dull ache, or even sock sensation. Bruising can occur sometimes at the places where the needles are inserted. Make sure to let your acupuncturist know if you are taking any blood thinners. We hope that this blog has helped you to know about the acupuncture treatment for fertility.
