  1. Lubrication

  2. Lesson Aim • Introduce Lubrication systems • Explain friction, viscosity, boundary lubrication and pressure lubrication. • Introduce and overview of the system. • Facilitate the use of LJ create software. Lubrication units. • Lesson Objectives • The student will be able to state what type of lubrication is used on two components. • The student will be able to state the difference between a low or high viscosity index oil. • The student will have completed 1 sections of LJ lubrication

  3. What is Friction? Next >

  4. Machined Metal Under Microscope Next >

  5. What is a lubricant? A substance capable of reducing friction by making surfaces smooth or slippery. What is oil? An 'oil' is any substance that is liquid at ambient temperatures and is hydrophobic but soluble in organic solvents. Oils have a high carbon and hydrogen content. Next >

  6. Next >

  7. Viscosity Viscosity is flow rate of oil. 30 10 Low viscosity (on right) flows more easily. Low viscosity better for cold operation. Modern oils are multi-viscosity. Next >

  8. Oil film Crankshaft journal Use of Oil Acts as barrier to reduce friction and wear. Usually refined from crude oil. For rotating bearing, shaft diameter less than bearing inner diameter. Next >

  9. Boundary Lubrication Oil adheres to the surfaces and keeps them apart Next >

  10. Pressure Lubrication Next >

  11. Pressure Lubrication Next >

  12. Lubrication System The reservoir of oil is held in the sump(deep part of the oil pan). Drawn into engine throughthe pickup. Oil is forced round the system by a pump. The system is protected from over high pressure, by a pressure relief valve Particulates removed by a filter. Carried aroundin galleries. Next >

  13. Oiling Methods Pressure-fed systems feed upper parts of engine. Splash and drip-feedfeeds down to the lower parts. Next >

  14. Lesson Aim • Introduce Lubrication systems • Explain friction, viscosity, boundary lubrication and pressure lubrication. • Introduce and overview of system. • Facilitate the use of LJ create software. Lubrication units. • Lesson Objectives • The student will be able to state what type of lubrication is used on two components. • The student will be able to state the difference between a low or high viscosity index oil. • The student will have completed 1 sections of LJ lubrication

  15. Lubrication System Components Dipstick measures level of oil in the sump. Sump bolts to the bottom of the engine and holds the oil supply sealed by a gasket. Oil filtermounted on cylinder block. Oil pump mounted at front. Oil pickup linkssump to oil pump. Drain plug, to change oil. Next >

  16. Rotary Oil Pump Inner rotor driven by pump shaft. Inner rotor drives outer rotor. Oil is forced from input, to output. May be shaft, gear or chain driven. Next >

  17. Crankshaft-Driven Pump Drive splines on crankshaft. Main seal. Inner gear (rotor) driven by crankshaft. Outer gear (rotor) driven by inner gear. Pump housing at front of engine. Pump insert holds drive within housing. Next >

  18. Gear Pump Pump shaft drives one gear. Other gear turned. Low pressure at input. High pressure at output. Next >

  20. Oil Pressure Relief Valve Spring Keeping valve Shut Pressure Forces Valve Open Next >

  21. Oil Warning Light As oil pressure builds, the switch opens, extinguishing the light. Next >

  22. Oil Filter Cartridge type Spin-on oil filter with O-ring seal. Centre outlet tube. Input feed holes. Paper elements trap impurities. Keeps impurities out of the engine. Next >

  23. Filter showing Internal Bypass Bypass Valve Next >

  24. Replaceable Element Filter More environmental disposal Next >

  25. Oil Filter Housing Bolts to cylinder block. Oil pressure switch. May have oil cooler adapter. Fed by oil cooler hoses. Oil filter. Heat shield. Next >

  26. Oil Cooler May be used to lower oil temperature. Heat exchanger similar to radiator. Hoses/pipes are usually connected to adapter on oil filter. Often used for heavyduty applications. Next >

  27. Galleries Carry oil to all parts of engine. Lubricates valve gear, crank andcamshaft. To and from oil filter. From pickup to pump. Next >
