    3. Indian Railways (08-09) One of largest Rail System in the world 64,015 Route Kms of Track 7,030 Railway Stations 1.4 million employees 15,000 passenger trains daily 19 million passengers every day 5,401 Freight trains daily, 837 Mill T freight/yr 8,592 locos, 49,110 coaches & 211,763 wagons Rs 1050 billion ($ 25 b) Capital at Charge Rs 798 ($ 19) billion Gross traffic Receipts Rs 91.75 ($ 3.7) billion Revenue Surplus

    8. This calls for… Efficient Management of – Infrastructure Asset utilisation Ticketing, booking Manpower – Crew, Engg staff & Admin Admin, HR, Finance Reliability, Safety & Security of Operations Real time online information

    12. Information at Railway Stations

    16. Role which ICT can play in railways ? Informed decision making Increase in operational flexibility Improve asset utilization – Availability Raise effective capacity Improve safety Improve Security Cost savings Increased visibility Improve customer satisfaction Integration of dispersed elements Infrastructure, Operations, rolling stock, safety, energy etc Customer Centric Organisation – Right information at right time and at right place 16

    17. ICT Verticals Train Operation/Safety – Train control, Engineering control, Emergency control, TPC, Driver-Guard, Data Loggers Operation Support System CMS, TMS, FOIS, COIS, ACD Commercial Ticketing, PRS, UTS, Freight Passenger Information System Train enquiry, reservation enquiry, Announcement, displays, Coach Guidance Systems Fixed Asset Management Track, Land, Bldgs & Structures, Power, Signaling Rolling Stock Asset management Locos, Coaches, Wagons Administrative – ERP Solutions HR, Accounts, Administration, Pension Projects, MIS, Stores, Procurement

    18. Challenges 16 Zonal HQs, 66 Divisional HQ with 100 Control offices No. of Coaching and Goods yards Distributed information Manual/Physical form Non uniform/compatible standards Segregated communication network Digitizing information Power supply Heterogeneous Traffic on complex N/w

    19. Reliable Passenger Information? Uncertainties in train operation Large and Widely Spread Railway Network Different Type and Class of Trains to Varied Destinations Local and social problems Different class of people Scarcity of reserved Accommodation Information is Important before reaching station at station during train journey On arrival Possible through Centralised Information Dissemination System

    20. Train Safety ? Station Areas reasonably protected through vehicle detection and interlocking to guard against Human Error Station Managers are Stationary & in communication with control Block Sections are also covered Loco’s/Trains Need means of Communication and safety equipment to guard against human error Driver being mobile, reliable communication is challenge GSM-R for Loco to control communication On Board Safety System- AWS Train Protection and Warning System Anti Collision Device. Disaster management System.

    21. Security at Railway Stations and Trains Important in the interest of National Security Integrated IP based Surveillance System Networked IP Cameras linked to security control room Baggage Scanning Machines Metal/mm wave doors/detectors Centralised data storage & processing 24X7 monitoring Identification of unusual objects & movements Automated information and escalation to concerned agencies as planned Preventive action before incident!

    22. Requirements OFC based Digital data communications Radio/ satellite based Asset tracking & monotoring system GPS/ radio based Train location system On Board Train Control system Sensors – Track, Rolling Stock, gates - health monitoring, Intelligent analysis Tactical and strategic traffic planners Holistic Security systems

    27. Modern Technology: Emergency rescue & recovery

    29. SIMRAN : Train Information System Technology Mission for Railway Safety (TMRS)” one of the project selected was “Satellite Imaging for Rail Navigation (SIMRAN)” . Purpose of the project is to standardize the GPS/GSM technology for tracking of trains and to disseminate the train running information to the passengers through Internet, SMS on Mobile phones, Call Centers, IVRS and through Train Indication Boards at the Railway Stations. Use by Operators to schedule train operations, by maintainers to schedule maintenance blocks. GIS based display at SM’s/ Control panel to exactly know train location. GIS based Centralised Train Operation and Information system

    30. SIMRAN..

    31. Railways use GIS in their Organisation for Infra Mgmt & Maint plg Engg track, bridges, tunnels & yards Electric Power Distribution N/W Signalling installations & comm N/W Real state Mgmt Maintenance of locos & other rolling stock – depot management Shipment & Asset tracking Planning for replacement, works in progress, sensitive spots Natural terrain, site conditions Railway Asset management

    32. Data Convergence MPLS-IP Platform- Convergence PRS, UTS – commercial appl FOIS, COIS, ClMS, CrMS – Information appl Railnet – MIS, VC NGN based voice switching Rly Telephone exchanges connected using Class-4 NGN switch for inter zonal/divisional voice traffic Core Network Need for up gradation using Carrier Ethernet Data Centers Requirement for Distributed DC with central DR site Access N/w

    33. The system can then report specific incidents to the appropriate party, e.g. theft of cable, a vehicle blocking a level crossing or a lorry that has crashed into a railway bridge, could be reported to the Police. The quality of points, location of trains or maintenance workers to the train company. 34. Indian Railway Portal - Architecture

    36. By using integrated ICT Infrastructure & suitable algorithm on railways, we can have real time traffic management: Integrate all aspects of Train Traffic Management Improve both safety and security Raise effective capacity Improve asset utilization – Availability Measure and control costs Reduce energy consumption and emissions Increase economic viability and profits. Improve customer satisfaction – CRM, Help Lines “Manage the unexpected”
