  1. The Invisible Crisis: How Malnutrition Can Affect the Lives of Street Children Malnutrition in India remains a significant public health issue in India. Despite having one of the fastest-growing economies globally, the country still struggles with providing basic healthcare and nutrition to its citizens. Malnutrition is particularly prevalent among marginalised communities, and it has far-reaching consequences, especially for children. According to a report by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), around 40% of Indian children under the age of five suffer from malnutrition. This issue is even more severe among children from impoverished backgrounds, where the rate of malnutrition can reach as high as 60%. Malnutrition can manifest in different ways, including stunting, wasting, and being underweight. These conditions can lead to developmental delays, cognitive impairment, and a weakened immune system, making children more susceptible to infections and diseases. Marginalised children often suffer the most due to malnutrition. These children come from families with limited resources, making it difficult for them to access nutritious food. Additionally, they often lack access to basic healthcare facilities, making it challenging to address malnutrition-related illnesses. This issue is compounded by other socio-economic factors, including poor sanitation and hygiene, which can further exacerbate malnutrition. The repercussions of malnutrition on a child's future can be devastating. Malnourished children often have a shorter attention span, lower academic achievement, and a higher likelihood of dropping out of school. They

  2. are also more likely to suffer from chronic health problems, which can lead to a reduced quality of life and a lower life expectancy. The economic impact of malnutrition is also significant. Malnourished children are more likely to be unproductive and, therefore, less likely to contribute to the economy. Furthermore, malnutrition can increase healthcare costs, creating a further burden on an already-strained healthcare system. Addressing malnutrition in India requires a multifaceted approach that includes improving access to nutritious food, increasing healthcare facilities and services, and improving sanitation and hygiene. Government policies, such as the National Nutrition Mission, aim to address malnutrition by providing targeted interventions and increasing public awareness of the issue. In conclusion, malnutrition remains a significant public health challenge in India, with far-reaching consequences, especially for marginalised children. CRY UK, a charity for children in India, has been addressing this critical issue by ensuring children have access to the nutrition and healthcare they need to thrive and reach their full potential.
