    1. Compare the qualities of the exemplary man and the exemplary woman as they are represented in the Odyssey.

    2. The Odyssey is a story of adventuring and homecoming. Which is more important to Odysseus?

    3. Discuss the character of Odysseus as portrayed in the Odyssey? How are we to interpret him? Does he learn anything? Is there any significance to his experience of his adventures?

    4. With reference to two or three characters or incidents, discuss the role of women in the Odyssey

    5. What are Odysseus' most prominent characteristics? How do those characteristics help or hinder his successful homecoming? Support your answer with relevant and specific examples from the Odyssey.

    6. Trace the development of Telemachus. What is the result of Odysseus's absence from his home in Ithaca? Why doesn't Telemachus attack the suitors? If the Odyssey could be seen as "the coming of age" story of Telemachus, what seems necessary for T. to do before he can become a man?

    7. The first word of the Odyssey is Man. In Greek, this is the word andra, which means not just ONE individual but ALSO the concept of what makes a Human Being. Discuss the reasons why Homer begins the Odyssey with this word, rather than by starting with the name Odysseus. In other words, what is this epic really about?

    8. What is the role of ritual in the Odyssey? Again, how does it help the poet to tell the story?

    9. What is the role of story-telling in the Odyssey?

    10. There are many repeated stories, scenes, rituals, customs, myths and model tales told throughout the Odyssey. Is the repetition a useful story-telling device or just a culturally specific method of entertainment? Support your views.
