  6. This lesson we are going to look at ways in which we might help ourselves to calm down, or overcome our feelings of anxiety. Let’s try some Guided Visualisation… First sit in a comfortable position and to close your eyes if it feels okay. Your teacher is going to read something to help you relax… Click for passage

  7. How else might we calm ourselves down? Have you ever considered these… • saying things to yourself (‘helpful’ or ‘hopeful’ talk) as a tool to help us to overcome fear (and other feelings) – for example, ‘I won’t feel so bad once I’ve started’, ‘I’ve done things like this before’, ‘I can try and stop if I really don’t like it’, and so on; • thinking about how much we want the end result (seeing ‘the big picture’); asking yourself helpful questions, such as ‘What’s the worst that can happen?’, ‘Will I really remember this in three months’ time?’, ‘Will anyone else?’ Can you think of more?

  8. Your Task Record the ways you help yourself to calm down and overcome you fears and anxieties as a poster. You might want your poster to include… • Tell yourself to STOP!• Give your thinking brain time • Tell yourself you can handle this!• Say to yourself ‘be calm … be calm … be calm’ • Walk away • Count backwards from 10, 20, 100 • Tell someone else how you feel • Breathe deeply – in and out five Times • Tense and relax your muscles • Take some exercise • Go into a deserted place and shout • Feel your pulse • Picture yourself dealing with the situation calmly and strongly

  9. Lesson 4 • I know that I am valued at school. • I understand how it feels to do or start something new, and why. • I can explain how I go about solving a problem and can give you an example of a problem I have solved.

  10. Mary is about to join our school She’s a good footballer, and plays for Wigan Girls Team When she gets nervous she stammers, and because of this, at her old school they were unkind to her She’s feeling really nervous about joining our school How can we make Mary feel welcome, accepted and less nervous about joining our school?

  11. . One of the key aspects of the class charter should be that everyone is included as we all have our special gifts, talents and individual differences. One way of demonstrating how we are all included is for us to undertake the Class Crossword Challenge.

  12. Lesson 5 • I know that I am valued at school. • I understand how it feels to do or start something new, and why. • I can explain how I go about solving a problem and can give you an • example of a problem I have solved. In today’s lesson you will begin to make a Class Guided Leaflet for our class…

  13. Lesson 6 I know some of the things that help us in school to learn and play well together. Drawing on our experiences of building a community that enjoys learning, creating a classroom charter and exploring feelings, today each of us will be given the opportunity to decide: • one thing that they would take with them from this school to an ‘ideal’ school if they were given the chance; • one thing they would leave behind; • one new thing or idea that they would create especially to take.

  14. Your Task You will be given 3 leaves. Red –the thing we leave behind. Yellow –the new idea and Green –the thing we take with us… Take With Us Leave Behind New Idea

  15. Lesson 7 To consider how successful our New Beginning in Year Five has been. Today, we are going to review our New Beginnings Topic. What have we learnt from it and what have we been able to apply? On the next slide are some questions to help us consider and make our responses.

  16. Lesson 7 • Have you managed to calm yourself down this week? What made you feel you needed to calm down? What did you do? Can you share it with the class in some way? • Were there any times when you felt like a ‘can’t-be-bothered’ person? What was that about? Was there anything you did to change the way you felt? • How far are we keeping to our class charter? • These are the things we said we would learn to do in our work on this theme… Do you think you can do those things now? Over to you –write a few sentences about one of the aspects of our topic from above, and illustrate it.
