  2. HISTORY Set up in 1999, on response to the urgent imperative of committing with our reality set on the IX Catholic Church Synod of Santiago. Following this commitment, Belén Educa Foundation was born as a private non profit institution dependent on the Archbishop of Santiago, devoted to educate in the poorest areas of Santiago.

  3. WHERE ARE WE? Where families monthly income is lower than US$ 250 (45% of chilean school population belongs to low and low-middle socio-economic groups). Where parents has 7 or 8 years of schooling. Where unemployment is the rule.

  4. WHERE DO OUR STUDENTS LIVE? Where interfamily violence is common and mono parental families also. Where homes are overcrowded. Where relatives are usually alcoholics and drug addicts.

  5. WHAT KIND OF RISKS DO OUR STUDENTS CONFRONT? Drug dealing and addiction. Alcoholism Delinquency Prostitution Early pregnancy Lack of self-esteem

  6. OUR MISSION Offer first-class education to the most vulnerable groups in Chilean society.

  7. HOW IT STARTED Belén Educa started building its first school on 1999, officially opened in 2000. Thanks to a successful alliance between Church, State and private sector, an average rhythm of growth of a school per year has been possible.

  19. THE PROJECT Prepare students for life through high quality educational programs, considering pastoral, social and sports development, all that allows them to achieve without problems the demands of our developing country.

  21. ACHIEVEMENTS IN EIGHT YEARS 9.800 pupils in 14 years of schooling. 460 highly motivated teachers. Constant training programs to improve teachers capacities and performance assessment. Build and organized 8 schools in the poorest areas of Santiago. 40.000 m2built. 13.000 studentsinstalled capacity. Provide high quality academic programs. Ensure a caring environment. Teach and practice Christian values.

  22. Extend our assistance to the community. More than 5.000 poor families reached. Offer adult education programs to complete their studies and sacramental pastoral care. 7 Technical Schools with four specialization areas: Telecommunication, Administration, Gastronomy, Construction. 100% of graduates get proffesional internship in prestigious companies. 48% of 2007 generation are in undergraduate programs. 440 students with special needs are receiving specialists assistance.   27. INQUIRY BASED SCIENCE LEARNING (ECBI) PROJECT Program based on the most updated scientific knowledge about learning. Responds to a world wide need of improving scientific understanding. Internationally proven and researched pedagogical strategy. In Chile, a wide and powerful collaborative effort. Achieves effectively learning in students.

  29. SCIENCE PROJECT RESULTS This year we achieved the goal of covering a 50% of the national science curriculum with inquiry based science learning method (ECBI project) in our 8 schools. The project is reaching 6.440 students each year. Two modules have been implemented from 1st to 8th grade, the whole elementary education. So each student is planned to experience the program for 8 years. Then each year the total amount of children reached by ECBI increases in a complete generation (about 730 students). 2007 results in science national standard test (SIMCE) over the national average.

  30. SCIENCE PROJECT RESULTS Almost the 75% of the students assessed in 4th grade shows an intermediate or advanced level of achievement in science national standard test (SIMCE).

  34. INFANTILE ORCHESTRA PROJECT A proven method extended in Chile with successful results with children in social risk. Focused on developing self-esteem and sense of belonging, the Orchestra project doesn’t leave behind high quality musical learning process. With a team conformed by a Director and 8 instrument monitors from chilean universities, theoretical and instrument execution classess and practices has been a huge challenge for our students.

ORCHESTRA PROJECT RESULTS Implementation of an innovative work model: Students monthly attend a 3 hours long orchestra session with the director after school, together with 30 minutes of individual instrument classes during this session. Generation of a document with best practices and procedures to expand this model to the rest of our schools. 90% class attendance. After a year of work students are able to perform 5 classical pieces of music, of an initial level. They have already played 2 concerts for their school mates and their parents. A third concert is planned for september in another Belén Educa School. They are going on a tour!
