  1. Wisdom tooth extraction

  2. Wisdom tooth extraction • Wisdom tooth extraction is a common dental procedure that involves the removal of one or more of the four wisdom teeth, also known as third molars. These teeth usually emerge in the late teenage years or early twenties and can cause various dental problems if they do not grow in properly or if they are impacted. • In this blog, we will discuss what wisdom teeth are, the reasons for extraction, the procedure itself, recovery, and possible complications.

  3. Wisdom tooth extraction • What are wisdom teeth? • Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to develop and are located at the back of the mouth. They usually emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. In many cases, they can grow in normally and function like any other teeth. However, in some cases, they can become impacted, which means they do not have enough space to grow properly and may become partially or completely trapped beneath the gum line. This can cause pain, swelling, and infection.

  4. Wisdom tooth extraction • Why are wisdom teeth extracted? • Wisdom teeth may need to be extracted for several reasons, including: • Impaction: If a wisdom tooth is impacted, it can cause pain, swelling, and infection. In some cases, it can even damage adjacent teeth or cause a cyst to form. • Crowding: If the mouth is too small to accommodate all the teeth, the wisdom teeth may push the other teeth out of alignment, causing crowding and other orthodontic problems.

  5. Wisdom tooth extraction • Gum disease: Wisdom teeth can be more prone to gum disease due to their location and difficulty in cleaning. • Cysts or tumors: In rare cases, wisdom teeth can cause cysts or tumors to form, which may require removal. • Decay: Wisdom teeth are located at the back of the mouth and are difficult to clean properly, which can lead to decay and gum disease.

  6. Wisdom tooth extraction • What does the procedure involve? • Wisdom tooth extraction is typically performed by a dentist or oral surgeon. The procedure can be done under local anesthesia, which numbs the area around the tooth, or under general anesthesia, which puts the patient to sleep. The choice of anesthesia will depend on the patient's preference, the number of teeth being extracted, and the complexity of the procedure. • Once the anesthesia has taken effect, the dentist or oral surgeon will make an incision in the gum tissue and remove any bone that is blocking access to the tooth. The tooth is then removed from its socket using forceps or a surgical drill. If the tooth is impacted, the dentist or oral surgeon may need to cut it into smaller pieces to make it easier to remove.

  7. Wisdom tooth extraction • After the tooth has been removed, the area is cleaned and stitched up if necessary. Gauze is placed over the extraction site to help stop any bleeding. • What is the recovery process like? • The recovery process after wisdom tooth extraction can vary depending on the individual and the complexity of the procedure. However, in general, patients can expect some discomfort and swelling in the days following the procedure.

  8. Wisdom tooth extraction • It is important to follow the dentist's or oral surgeon's instructions carefully in order to promote healing and reduce the risk of complications. This may include: • Taking pain medication as prescribed. • Applying ice packs to the face to reduce swelling. • Eating soft, cool foods for the first few days after the procedure. • Avoiding smoking and using straws, as the suction can dislodge the blood clot and delay healing.

  9. Wisdom tooth extraction • Keeping the extraction site clean by rinsing gently with salt water. • Resting and avoiding strenuous activity for a few days after the procedure. • Patients may also experience some bleeding in the first few hours after the procedure. This can be managed by biting down on a piece of gauze and changing it every 30-60 minutes until the bleeding stops.
