  1. History of Mysore Mysore was the capital of the Kingdom of Mysore until 1950, except in the 18th century when Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan were the de facto rulers for a 40-year period. Mysore state continued to be ruled by Maharaja H.H. Jaya Chamaraja Wadiyar till Mysore became part of Indian Republic on 26-1-1950. And now the Mysore city is the headquarters of Mysore District. Mysore city is also known as the 'City of Palaces' and the 'Ivory City'.

  2. Culture of Mysore Mysore has been a city where all religions have co-existed in harmony for many centuries. Even when Mysore was culturally at its zenith under the Vijayanagar Empire and the Wodeyars the rulers always encouraged all religions and cultures without any discrimination.

  3. Mysore Dasara Mysore Dasara is the ‘Naada Habba’ (State festival) of Karnataka State, and Mysore is well known for the festivities that take place during the Dasara period. Dasara festival can be traced back to the Puranas and is widely observed across India, in the south it achieved its special prominence under Vijayanagara Kings in 15th Century.

  4. Cheluvamba Mansion Mysore The Maharajas of Mysore built a number of ornate buildings during their reign. Most of these buildings were built for personal use. Almost all these buildings are intact to this day. Most of these royal buildings house a number of modern institutions of the city of Mysore.

  5. Chamundi Temple Mysore The Chamundi Temple on top of the Chamundi hills is the most famous temple in Mysore, since Goddess Chamundi or Chamundeshwari is the presiding deity of Mysore. The temple has a quadrangular structure.

  6. Folk Arts Museum in Mysore Another interesting a unique museum that adds to the character of Mysore city is the Folk Arts Museum. The museum is located in the magnificent Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion, which is on the Mysore University campus at Manasagangotri.

  7. Brindavan Gardens Mysore One of the most visited places in Mysore by locals and by tourists is the famous Brindavan Gardens. Located about 19 kms from the heart of Mysore these beautiful gardens are laid out below the Krishnaraja Sagar dam built across the river Cauvery.

  8. Economy In Mysore Tourism is the major industry in Mysore. The city attracted about 3.15 million tourists in 2010. Mysore has traditionally been home to industries such as weaving, sandalwood carving, bronze work and the production of lime and salt.
