  1. IFTA Reporting Requirements for 2022

  2. What is IFTA? IFTA is abbreviated as “International Fuel Tax Agreement” IFTA is an agreement between 48 US states and 10 Canadian provinces. It was created to simplify fuel tax collection and reporting for interstate commercial carriers. IFTA reports help calculate how much the truckers owe fuel tax in each state or province based on miles driven in each jurisdiction. Click here to know more about IFTA.

  3. IFTA Licence If carriers operate the following “qualifying motor vehicles” on highways must apply for an IFTA license to the base jurisdiction: • A gross vehicle weight of at least 26,000 pounds is required. • Three or more axles are required. • Trucks used to transport commercial goods across state borders. Once the IFTA application has been processed, the carrier will receive an IFTA license in the mail and two IFTA decals to display on both sides of the vehicle. Note: Decals expire on December 31 of each year, make sure to renew every year. Click here to know more about how to apply for an IFTA licence.

  4. IFTA Reporting The major goal of IFTA licensee’s is to simplify the reporting of fuel tax and miles traveled on the IFTA jurisdiction information to base state. Carriers must report the IFTA return on every quarter: • 1st quarter (January to March) — May 2, 2022 • 2nd quarter (April to June) — August 1, 2022 • 3rd quarter (July to September) — October 31, 2022 • 4th quarter (October to December) — January 31, 2023 Click here to know more about IFTA filing due dates and penalty.

Information required for IFTA Reporting • Tracking miles traveled in each state. • Fuel purchased in each jurisdiction. • Total gallons or liters of fuel that is consumed by a qualifying motor vehicle. • Vehicle details such as the truck/unit number, gross vehicle type, fuel type, fleet name, fleet number, make, and model. • Business information such as the EIN, the name of the company, the type of business, and the address. • IFTA details including the country, base jurisdiction, and the IFTA Account Number. 6. Calculating taxes owed for each state and province Carrier must calculate the amount of fuel tax payable for each jurisdiction. This depends on the applicable rates during the current IFTA quarter.
