Interracial Dating

When people refer to interracial dating, they particularly mean the romantic union of individuals from other cultures. To be honest, relationships have evolved substantially from those of the past as the world has come to embrace and become more accepting of the diverse races that make up its people. 1. Unpluggd Media Co What We Miss Out On When We Concentrate On Whiteness In Interracial Relationships

  2. In the United States, the way we discuss interracial relationships is frequently derogatory and destructive, especially in the media, entertainment, and online forums. Since the primary focus of these debates is frequently on Interracial Dating between non-whites and whites, whiteness is constantly elevated to the centre of attention, and anything outside of it is "othered." 1

  3. It's critical to draw attention to instances where the representation we are given is inadequate or harmful in a culture that values representation so highly. It seems pretty obvious to me that depictions of interracial relationships in popular culture and the conversations surrounding these relationships are failures because they are binary and incredibly formulaic, such as when white partners ask their racialized partners to accept them for being white or even when they use their relationship as a defence against accusations of racism. 2

  5. Interracial dating are currently portrayed as social phenomena that can be fetishized and sold. Interracial relationships of all kinds are routinely viewed through the prism of consumerism and commodification in our society. Furthermore, the goal of commodification is in total conflict with the accurate assessment of power relations. Influencers that specialize in inter-racial relationships on TikTok and Instagram are a good illustration of this. The most subtly offensive racial speech may be found under the hashtags #mixedfamily and #interracialcouple, which is, quite frankly, quite cringeworthy. 4

  6. The bedroom will not be the scene of the revolution. If we pick up a new language or a cooking technique, it won't happen. If we find out how to address our partner's parents or what music their family likes at family reunions, it won't happen. All of those things are good and frequently essential, but in order to have actual conversations, we must start taking power and decentering whiteness seriously. 5
