  1. Call +971-56-7029840 Understanding LAN and WAN Cabling In any small or big organization to schools, businesses, we find computers in a network. There are basically two types of networks, LAN and WAN. LAN stands for Local area network and WAN stands for wide area network. LAN connects two or more computers within a smaller range of area, a more localized network. WAN on the other hand as the name suggests connects two or more computers over a larger area, sometimes it could be across nations too. Being a more localized network, the LANs are quite a bit faster and more secured, on the other hand, WANs being spread across nations too are prone to security threats unless they are in a deployed with some kind of security system. Let us see how the LAN and WAN cabling works in a system. As mentioned already, LANs are not much widespread and have fewer computers in the localized area inside the network, connected by means of a cable making use of a switch or a router. This helps in basically transferring files or any form of data across the network. WAN on the other hand could be a LAN or LANs connected to WANs. There are three types in which the LAN and WAN cabling is done-UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair), Fiber- optic cabling and wireless. A company decides which medium to use depending on the factors like length of the cable required, cost involved in setting up the network as UTP is relatively cheaper as

  2. compared to the fiber-optic cable. Then, the bandwidth that is required for the network, if large amount of data is required to be transferred, then fiber-optic cable is an ideal choice. Then one more factor that is essentially to be considered is the external interference with the signals. Going wireless means, the speed is comparatively slower as compared to the wired network; however, they are making efforts to speed up the process of data transfer using even the Wi-Fi. Let us see how the Ethernet LAN works. Ethernet is one of the most commonly used LANs that makes use of either UTP or fiber optic cable. With the UTP, there are two types of interfaces that the Ethernet uses –MDI, MDIX MDI stands for Media Dependent Interface. We use MDI for connecting the devices such as computers, servers or routers. However, for connecting the hubs or switches, MDIX is used. MDIX stands for Media dependent Interface, Crossover. Then comes the types of UTP cables that are used while networking. One is the straight through cable and the other is crossover cable. The straight through cable is used to connect different kinds of devices like a computer to a hub, while the crossover cable is used to connect the same kinds of devices like switch to a switch, a hub to a hub. When it comes to WAN cabling, WAN by definition is stretched across wide areas. WAN could be connecting the LANs across the globe as well. The WAN network within a country could be faster as compared to connecting the places across the countries. Data Communication equipment (DCE) and Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) are used in WAN connections. The communication in the WAN connection is set in such a way that sender of the signal and the receiver has to be in sync with respect to time. For example a signal is sent , the receiving end should set a clock and send a sample signal every fraction of a second. Before we get into the DCEs and the DTEs, we will first have to know about the clock rates. A clock rate is basically something which is fixed to understand at what rate the data has to be received. DCE: The DCE is basically the sender of the signal DTE: It is the receiving end of the clocking service sent by the DCE. The WAN works by setting a clock rate to the router, which in turn sets the speed at which the communication takes place in the network. VRS Technologies takes the effort to make your business highly competitive in the industry with a planned and firmly designed LAN and WAN Cabling Solutions.
