Free-range deer will thrive in ideal circumstances, such as shelter, enough water and forage. 1. Certain Lodges Are Renowned For The Deer Hunts They Offer Hunting in Alabama, Georgia, the rest of the South and the US, is a favored pastime for many Americans, but also for numerous individuals and groups that visit the country from abroad every year. This contributes greatly to the country’s coffers and serves as stimulus to keep the industry alive – and to ensure that hunting in the country remains as healthy as ever. That is why there are programs in place and initiatives driven to also make sure the youth is given ample opportunity to learn from their fathers and other family members the ethos, the skills and the history of hunting in the different states - and also about preferences. Hunters and wing-shooters all have their own favorites and preferences, whether you like whitetail deer hunting in Alabama’s Black Belt better than elsewhere, or whether your favorite wing-shooting activity refers to grouse, quail, pheasant or dove, for example. Deer hunters, just like other hunters and wing-shooters, are always looking for the best destinations to hunt, whether it is on a friend’s property, or whether it is because a great lease has made it possible. Good leases are normally offered by lodge owners, those landowners that develop their lands to offer good hunting opportunities. To this end they put all the appropriate systems in place, they ensure a good management plan to support good habitat and the ideal circumstances for the deer to thrive. Many of these landowners are also lodge owners that entrust the running and administration of such programs to wildlife conservationist consultants who have the knowledge to institute best practice. This means, therefore, that owners and managers of good lodges are in a position then to offer their hunters and wing-shooters a great hunting destination, as lodges also compete for business. The good lodges, ultimately, are the successful ones as they tend to attract positive mention and therefore the hunters. This, in turn, leads to more interest in their facility and even more visitors. For the deer hunter it is important to know not only that the lodge he/she is considering is known for offering quality animals, but also good service to make their hunt and the overall experience at the lodge a positive one, an experience to be cherished for a long time afterwards. This shows that there needs to be good interaction between all, i.e., the lodge owner, their managers and/or consultants that help them drive and promote their lodge. Also, without a good habitat management plan in place, chances are that birds and deer will move away, or they may be of sub-standard quality. It is also important that the lodge goes to trouble in other ways to make a positive impression. They should make sure their accommodations are top of the range, their service fast and

  2. effective, they should look at the possibility of offering more than the hunt, for example additional activities such as games evenings for visitors and hunters, hikes around the property, fishing if they have good streams, and any other activity that can be easily included in their service. It is important to make an impression lest the visitors do not return in the future. It is also important for a good lodge to offer dogs for the hunt, to make sure ladders and stands, shooting houses are in place to aid the hunter’s efforts. All of these issues make for a pleasant experience and will contribute to a lodge’s success and for making sure they are a preferred destination. Free-range deer will thrive in ideal circumstances, such as shelter, enough water and forage. The same is true for upland birds: if they have good groundcover, water and the seeds, fruits and grains they like to feed on, they will not leave. This will ensure that the lodge remains attractive for hunters and wing-shooters. The best of these lodges in the South and Southeast make sure they heed the important requirements.
