  1. Making Great Memories: Hunting Deer in Alabama Deer hunters – just like wing-shooters and others that enjoy the outdoors do their disciplines– understand the thrill of stalking, of following and finally bringing down that special buck you often have to wait for, sometimes for days. Alabama deer hunting, for example, creates some fine opportunities for the hunter to take a break from their normal, routine life in an office somewhere. Of course this applies, too, to the retired person with time on their hands while still living a passion that was instilled in them at a young age. Deer hunting in Alabama is, for many, the highlight of their year when they can simply forget about their normal life, when they can escape to a lodge that offers them a great time during which wonderful memories, to be cherished for a long time afterwards, can be made. The deer hunter, and this is true for hunters of other buck and species, or upland birds, will not simply visit any region or lodge because they advertise themselves as hunting destinations. There are simply too many good choices. The astute hunter does some research ahead of time so they are convinced they choose the best destination. Of course there are various factors to consider, of which the quality and abundance of deer and birdlife will always be right at the top. Lodges have to plan well to grab the attention of possible paying visitors. This means, essentially, offering their deer and other hunters a combination of good accommodation, food, areas to relax after the hunt and of, course, quality buck and doe where it is allowed to hunt the latter. Lodges quickly discern themselves from others for the service visitors can expect, and what quality prey they are offered. Hunters and professionals working in wildlife conservation understand that deer populations that are well raised are the ones that will attract the attention, and the business, of the hunters. This is why leading lodges all over the US, and certainly in the South in states such as Alabama, make sure they employ the services of good managers and wildlife biologists, for example, to ensure they put in place all of those systems that support healthy deer and other wildlife in the region. Some lodges come to mind, such as Alabama’s Westervelt Lodge among some, where visitors are ensured they can hunt on prime land which is conducive to raising good herds. This lodge, and others, understand the importance of the efforts that go into creating an ideal hunting climate. Of course good accommodations, Southern food and charm go a long way, but when the hunter leaves disappointed, he/she may not want to come back. That is why good lodges take trouble to ensure they institute habitat plans and deer management plans that offer deer herds the best environment in which they can flourish. The same goes for birdlife and the expectations of the wing-shooter. Planting food plots in addition to what nature offers in terms of forage, rivers full of fresh-water fish species, water sources and all other natural resources that animal populations require to deliver healthy young, is important. Deer, by their very nature free-range animals, will only stay on land that offers them food, shelter for themselves and their young, and habitat where they do not have to compete for survival. Good lodge managers understand all of these issues, which is why they create the best habitat, and why they have specific culling policies in place. With the correct balance, the perfect environment is created for the deer hunter to enjoy a memorable trip. The good hunting lodges in Alabama get this right. They make sure their deer and birdlife benefit from their wildlife and management plans and initiatives.
