  1. Pheasant Hunting In America As Popular As Ever Hunting in the American South has been popular forever, right from the time of the original inhabitants to carry on the activity right through to modern times. For many hunters it is about the excitement and the thrill, measuring their ability against that of the hunted, the whitetail deer, the different birds such as dove and quail, partridges, grouse, prairie chicken, chukar and other species of upland fowls, wild turkey and the ever-popular pheasant. Wing-shooting, as does deer hunting, brings in revenue for the state and the country, it stimulates retail sales of outfits and, importantly, rifles and shotguns, it brings clients that may not have visited in the past to regions to help stimulate interest and growth. Hunting is a huge industry and has brought great joy to millions over the world for the longest time. Hunters all have their preferences for the prey they are after, the state they like and visit most – and often a favourite hunting lodge too. Many parts of America, for example, are great for hunting, one of which, the Southeast, never disappoints for quality of deer and birds, and for offering visitors good selections. Some regions always stand out above others, and in the South, Alabama for example is often mentioned as a preferred destination for its quality animals, the friendly people and the great hunting lodges. So, whether you prefer wing-shooting or going for the buck, chances are you will have a mighty fine time and leave with quality meat and fond memories. One of those popular birds that the wing-shooter always seems to return for every autumn and winter, is the pheasant that remains a top choice for the upland hunter. Birds, just like other free-range roaming animals, will stay in a region if the habitat suits them, which immediately begs the question: what is the ideal habitat then? In many parts of the Southeast lodge owners and their managers make sure that they complement the natural habitat, which is often naturally suited to pheasants and other birds such as quail and dove, by looking after the habitat to include good water sources and those foods that these birds thrive on, such as, for example, grain fields and choices of wheat, where native grasslands offer them the habitat they prefer – and good cover. Hunting pheasants involves more than one option, and lodges make sure they can offer their visitors the best method for their lodge’s profile and the hunter’s circumstances. For example, some may offer the hunters a drive in a group where a guided hunt takes place with several hunters in, say, a large grain field where the pheasants are encouraged to leave their cover; when they then fly, hunters have some great opportunities to shoot. It can get quite exciting when droves of birds start flushing all over the place!

  2. Then of course there is the well-known and, for many, the preferred way to hunt pheasants: behind hunting dogs. Most good lodges offer the hunter the use of experienced flushing or pointing dogs; many are happy for owners to bring their own and they will make sure the dog is looked after, fed and given a place to rest. Pheasant hunting is as popular as ever in many states, notably the South, in states such as Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi; of course, they are found all over, especially the ringneck which enjoys a great following among wing-shooters. Lodges in the South and Southeast that are known for their upland bird hunting often go to the trouble to ensure their birds have access to good water sources and those berries, seeds and grain that they naturally feed on by making sure they have in place certain plans to ensure the birds can feed on these. To this end, lodge owners employ well-experienced managers that are tasked with making sure visiting hunters and wing-shooters are offered the best animals and birds to hunt during their stay.
