  1. The Wing-Shooter In The South Has Choices Hunters and shooters have their own preferences and the disciplines they enjoy best. Some live for their week or so every year in Alabama when they book their whitetail deer hunting trip, whereas another loves wing-shooting activities. Fortunately the South, and specifically Alabama, offers everybody ample opportunity to visit the lodges of the region, and whether you are looking for a deer hunting lodge, or a wing-shooting lodge, there are always choices. Among the best ones such as, say, west Alabama’s Westervelt Lodge, you do not have to choose as this is a lodge where both deer hunting and wing-shooting are practiced. Of course this is an example only of a great lodge – there are others as well. When the visitor starts looking around for the best wing-shooting lodge, for example, they will certainly have certain expectations and demands with regard to the choice of lodge they make. Wing-shooting has always been a popular pastime throughout the South – also Alabama, a state that often has good natural habitat for birds, but because birds are migratory, they will only stay on a piece of land or lodge that offers them good shelter, access to water and those foods sources that they thrive on. And unfortunately good natural habitat is not always enough. Good lodges make sure they employ the services of managers and monitors that ensure the habitat and land are managed in a way conducive for the birds wanting to stay there. This includes, for example, making sure they have access to grain fields, food plots and those seeds that the species prefers above all others. Similarly to what is done to ensure the habitat for deer suits the animals’ nature, habitat for certain bird species needs to be looked after. Some good lodges combine timber activity with hunting, which means the managers need to make sure the birds are not driven away but given the shelter and natural space where they can nest and raise their chicks. Of course lodges are limited as to when they can offer wing-shooting opportunities; therefore it is always advisable to be aware of the dates when wing-shooting is allowed. This helps with the visitor’s planning since one wing-shooter may prefer to hunt quail, another dove and yet another group pheasant, for example. Good lodges always have their dates well planned and may, therefore, be chosen above a lodge that appears less organized and professional, both in terms of how the visitor makes bookings and what they are offered. Depending on the lodge you visit and the quality of their service, you may book yourself a wing-shooting trip to a lodge that offers their shooters guided hunts, or wing-shooting with their own dogs, for example. Some lodges offer well-experienced hunting dogs, where another may give you the choice to bring your own pup for this purpose. In the South, and therefore also Alabama, the wing- shooter can enjoy the best time, provided they book their trip to a good, leading, well-known lodge with a great reputation for quality of accommodation, food, service and, of, course, the birds they offer their hunters and shooters. In Alabama pheasant, quail and dove are the most popular birds with other options such as, say, chukar, more limited. It is always good to know upfront what to expect of your wing-shooting experience before you book. For example: find out how the lodge organizes their pheasant shoot. How is it planned, around what and how many blinds for example. How many per outing are you allowed to shoot? Will they be cleaned and packed for you? These are questions most wing-shooters want answers to before they book trip. The same applies to the dove and quail hunt. Find out what the lodge does to make the hunt a great experience for the hunter. Wing-shooters that love their sport are, often, experienced, and they know what they are looking for in a good wing-shooting lodge.
