  1. MATERALIA International Roadshow September 2009

  2. Pôles de compétitivité (French clusters) For what purpose ? • make companies more competitive • develop employment on expanding markets • reinforce the area’s assets by innovation What is a « Pôle de Compétitivité » ? A concentration of : • companies • educational institutions • private and public research centers • in a given geographicarea and involved in a cooperative effort focusing on innovative projects with an economic application History 71 « Pôles de Compétitivité » (Clusters) active in France since 2006 based on : • One or more regions (22 in total) • a main topic : aerospace, automotive, IT, … 71 Pôles de compétitivité

  4. MATERALIA 3 locations: Metz Charleville-Mézières Nancy Our team : Managing Director Assistant Director Administrative Assistant 5 Project Managers MATERALIA is a « Materials Cluster » : • situated in North-Eastern France (Lorraine & Champagne-Ardenne regions), • specialized in structural and functional applications of materials It gathers on its territories 130 industrial and academic members and represents : • Number 1 French site for casting, forging and stamping • Number 1 French site for the production of automobile equipments • Second region in France for industrial services linked to the transformation of metals • First region in France for cooperative research on materials

  5. MATERALIA’s missions The cluster : • Creates links between research centers and companies • Fosters and coaches joint innovative projects • Organizes seminars on relevant topics, creates visibility and gives access to a network The missions : • Develop the competitive advantage of the local industry by fostering innovation • Reinforce and develop highly technological industrial activity • Improve the attractiveness of the Lorraine / Champagne Ardenne regions by strengthening their international visibility • Foster economic growth, employment and entrepreneurship

  6. Services Assistance in project engineering The MATERALIA team assists its members by : • Coaching them during the process of project engineering • Helping them find financial partners • Assisting them in finding technically competent partners Paving the way to financial support for their projects MATERALIA delivers its label to excellent projects, facilitating recognition by potential financial partners Activating the MATERALIA network • Seminars on technological & economic topics • Working groups • Newsletters • Technology monitoring

  7. Governing Board Executive Office Coordination Committee Funding Committee The MATERALIA Team • Olivier Bonnet • Managing Director • Sébastien Guenet • Assistant Director • Sébastien Guenet • In charge of the topics New shaping processes • And Sustainable Development • Stéphane Poinsot • In charge of the strategic topics Energy • And Aeronautics • Networking axis • R&D Project axis • Sophie Deleys • In charge of the topic Medical • Devices • And Nanomaterials Gwenael Levesque • In charge of the topic Automotive • And Composites • Market Development axis • Emilie Ladmiral • In charge of the topic Metallurgy and procedures CORE MARKET Topics TECHNICAL Topics SUPPORT Programmes Organization

  8. Project engineering Focusing on projects MATERALIA’s number one priority : Fostering cooperative projects • R&D projects : the key towards competitiveness • Innovative platform projects : a way to facilitate innovation in companies by sharing resources and services • Other projects : education, monitoring and economic intelligence, promotion of the regions, international development …) Materalia Projects : • 80 labelled projects since its creation in 2006 (123 M€) • 50 financed projects (76 M€)

  9. MATERALIA’s network Some of our member companies …

  10. MATERALIA’s network Some of our educational institutions …

  11. MATERALIA’s network Some national partner clusters ...

  12. Projects • 80 labelled projects : 123 M€ • 50 financed projects : 76 M€ • About 30 projects currently under way (2009)

  13. MATERALIA’s Strategy • MATERALIA has reached a significant critical mass : • In terms of local industry : • 15 % of the national workforce in metallurgical industry • 24 % in casting industry (1st rank) • 26 % in steel industry (1st rank together with North of France) • 30 % en forging and stamping industry • In terms of research : • 9th rank in results of the National Research Agency in 2008 • 40 % of the MATERALIA projects admitted on the national call for proposal « Materials and  Processes» • 10 % of national research capacity dedicated to materials

  14. MATERALIA’s Strategy Metallurgical Regions in Europe Work force

  15. MATERALIA’s Strategy • Becoming a leading cluster in the field of « structural and functional materials » • Structural materials have a high potential for economic growth : energy, raw materials, sustainable development • R&D investment and skills in this field have not increased or have even decreased in the past 20 years • North-Eastern France has a true potential to become a leader in these fields, if an appropriate strategy is implemented.

  16. Pull of the market Medical Devices Energy Aeronautics Automotive Presence of skills Size of the bubble : extent of the industrial background 4 core markets Energy Meet the challenges of high temperatures and severe environments. Discover new materials for tomorrow’s energies. Aeronautics Reduce weight in aircrafts, increase safety and environmental tolerance by using multi-material design and intelligent structures. Automotive Anticipate changes and guide companies along the path of innovation. Medical devices Seize the opportunities offered by this expanding market and develop materials for health applications.

  17. Technological impact Nanomaterials New shaping processes Sustainable development Composites Metallurgy Presence of skills 5 areas of technological development Metallurgy Control materials’ properties, invent tomorrow’s metallurgy Nanomaterials Develop the regional assets : surface treatment, sensors , alloys and polymers Composites  Confirm their utility and advantage in terms of weight reduction, resistance and cost reduction in replacement of or in combination with other materials New shaping processes Encourage specific techniques as rapid manufacturing and high speed machining … Sustainable Development Develop a regional platform for Life Cycle Analysis Size of the bubble : extent of the industrial background
