  1. Is Your Child As Safe On Your Balcony As You Think?

  2. Apartment living has been steadily growing in popularity across India in recent decades, and it’s little wonder, with the housing needs of such a huge population to meet. However, while apartments provide millions of families with safe, modern and comfortable spaces to live in, what they often can’t replicate, is the open space offered by an individual villa or farmhouse. While many larger apartment complexes have open spaces and small parks within their compounds, this is no substitute for a private garden or courtyard in which families can grow plants, entertain and simply enjoy the outdoors.

  3. That said, most apartment complexes offer at least one balcony per apartment, and depending on their size and positioning, they give families the opportunity to grow plants, dine in the fresh air, and even provide their children with a safe space to play in. But just how safe is a balcony for children? Provided a balcony has been childproofed in the following ways, there’s no reason why it can’t be a safe space for your kids to enjoy:

  4. Properly secure the doors While you may want your kids to enjoy playing ‘outside’ on the balcony, you most likely don’t want them to do so when unsupervised. So, ensure that all doors leading to the balcony have locks and latches that a small child isn’t able to open. That way, you’ll never have to worry about them going out there and having some kind of accident when you’re not looking.

  5. Install child safety nets These multi-purpose nets don’t just stop children (or adults or pets) from falling over the side of the balcony, but they also prevent pigeons from making a mess out there, too. Pigeons are not only dirty, but noisy, and most apartment owners don’t want birds roosting close to their homes. Safety nets are the ultimate humane and cost-effective solution for giving your kids a safe space to play in while enjoying the fresh air, and keeping pesky pigeons at bay, too. If you’d like to know more about having child safety nets installed for your balcony, reach out to a local company for guidance. Do note that the nets will not prohibit your view, and still allow air to permeate.

  6. DIY options While it’s recommended to have a professional install a balcony net, if you don’t want to go down that route, you could try making sure that the railings surrounding your balcony are as childproof as possible. This could include closing off any gaps with mesh or a more solid structure of your choice, and raising their height if possible. However, it’s important to note that these adjustments are in no way as reliable and secure as child safety nets, and may not look aesthetically pleasing, either.

  7. Keep furniture to a minimum, and away from the edge Curious kids may well try to climb up onto furniture so that they can look down from the balcony, or even jump off of it. As smaller kids don’t have an awareness of danger like adults or older children, accidents can easily (and sometimes do) happen. Keep furniture away from the balcony’s edge, and try to buy heavy, solid items that can’t be dragged or moved around. Ultimately, unless you have a child safety net installed, the safest way for kids to spend time on a balcony is when they’re under constant supervision. If you don’t have the time (or patience!) to continually monitor your kids while they play, then a safety net is the best solution
