  1. MAF/TIGER Database and Processing Environment AtriKalluri Assistant Division Chief Spatial Data Systems and Database Management Geography Division, US Census Bureau

  2. MAF/TIGER Database and Processing Environment • TIGER - Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing System • A digital map of US, Puerto Rico, & Island Areas • Contains • Roads (Streets), Rail, Hydro • Geographic Entity Boundaries • Housing Unit Locations • Address Ranges and Zip codes • Key Geographic Locations

  3. MAF/TIGER Database and Processing Environment • MAF – Master Address File • An inventory of all known living quarters in the US, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas • Contains • Mailing Address, if one exists • Descriptive Address, when no city-style address exists • Census Geographic Location • Source and History data

  4. MAF/TIGER Database and Processing Environment • Three basic types of spatial data are needed to support census and survey operations and to make the statistical data meaningful • Addresses • Features • Boundaries

  5. MAF/TIGER Database and Processing Environment • MAF/TIGER – Mission Critical Corporate Resource • System provides storage, processing, products and services that support agency’s statistical programs • Geocoding • Maps • Residential Address Lists • Continually updated with new address and geographic information • Wide public use of geographic information

  6. MAF/TIGER Database and Processing Environment • At Census, our partners areFederal, state, local, and tribal governments (~40,000) • Established a Geographic Partnership Program • Local Update of Census Addresses • Boundary and Annexation Survey • Partner Statistical Areas Program • Tribal Statistical Areas Program • New Construction • School Districts • Redistricting Data Program

  7. MAF/TIGER Database and Processing Environment • Typical Processes • Identify potential sources and establish partnerships • Establish a robust data storage/processing environment • Formulate a plan on how you would acquire the data • Define workflow • Process • Assess Quality • Disseminate • Feedback

  8. MAF/TIGER Database and Processing Environment • Current MAF/TIGER System • Oracle database • RAC environment • Oracle Spatial and Topology Data Model • Persistent Topology • Integrated MAF & TIGER • Unique batch processing environment • Benchmarks • In-house built software (core API, BRE, etc.)

  9. MAF/TIGER Database and Processing Environment • Current inflow of data • Interactive • GATRES • 3 tier architecture • Based on Acquis ADE (Map Viewer technology) • Supports over 500 simultaneous users • MTPS • Batch • BFUS (linear, areal), Address Update System • CHEA PET & GAADS • Updates of entities based on polygons

  10. MAF/TIGER Database and Processing Environment • Current outflow of data • Data Extracts, GRFs • TIGER/Line Shapefiles • Shapefiles (LISRDS) • Maps • Viewing tools (Map Viewer, MT View, TIGER on Google) • MAF Browser • PDB Viewer (WEBLOGIC)

  11. MAF/TIGER Database and Processing Environment • Serving TIGER data • Visualization tools for TIGER • TIGER Base Map • TIGER WMS • TIGER WFS • Based on OAS and ArcGIS10 • Source is TIGER PDB • Serve Corporate Listing Device

  12. MAF/TIGER Database and Processing Environment • Some MTDB statistics • EDGE$ 73,187,478 • FACE$ 22,597,539 • NODE$ 160,123,508 • RELATION$ 3,054,850,670 • Number of features (layers) = 68 • Number of hierarchical levels = 06

  13. MAF/TIGER Database and Processing Environment • Benchmarking • Spatial Lock the area • Pre-benchmark steps first • Adjacency requirements • By county from PRODTRAN • By current vintage '90' • Receiving schema(s) on PRODBNCH • National/State/ELCO schemas • Determine extent of features • Extract/export/import/merge • Post-benchmark steps including any clipping

  14. MAF/TIGER Database and Processing Environment • Product Database • Denormalization • Allows the creation of Geodatabase - Table by elemental feature type (point, linear, areal) - Single sdo_geometry column - No user defined data types - Length for number columns - GEOID column for geographic area tables • Stores calculated data - Expansion of feature name types, directions - MTFCC for an edge - Primary vs. alternate name designation • ‘Product-centric'

  15. Acquiring and Processing Data from Partners • Questions?
