  2. BIOGRAPHY Birth date – 25 Aug 1864 Parents - ShriRaghavji Gandhi and Smt.Manbai Birth place- Mahuva near Bhavnagar , Gujrat • - Got married • - Passed Matriculation Stood first in the District • - Appointed as Secretary of The Jain Association of India 1901 - Aug 7, death at the age of 37

  3. CONTRIBUTION TO JAINISM 1886 – April . He made the protest and the tax per head for pilgrims to Mt. Shatrunjaya was removed. 1891 – Won the Court Judgement in favour of the Jains regarding the factory for extracting fat on Shri SammedShikharji . Factory had to be closed. 1893 – Sept. Lectures on Jainisms at the Parliament of Religions at Chicago. 1893-95 - Lectures on Jain Philosophy in Chicago , Boston , New York , Washington D.C. and many other important cities of U.S. Lecture on Indian Philosophy in England , Germany and France 1896-99 - Travelled twice to U.S. Gave about 650 talks

  4. NEWSPAPERS COMMENT (SUMMARY) “ Mr. V.R. Gandhi is a brilliant lawyer of unusual attainments and is a master of fourteen languages including English. No one should fail to hear this eloquent native from India whenever opportunity occurs. One can gain more knowledge and truth in one evening than from any other source. He will answer all questions after the lecture that any one from the audience may choose to ask . There can not be too much said in the praise of this grand and noble man who daily lives up to the principles of purity which he advocates .”

  6. THREE CORE PRACTICES Ahimsa – live and let live - compassion and forgiveness towards all living beings Anekanta - non absolutism - regard and respect for other`s view Aparigrah – non possessiveness - limiting and balancing of needs

IMPLICATIONS Because of Gandhi`s huge effort , world knows - there exists a religion called Jainism - the Jains are vegetarians - that they are vegetarians because they believe in non – violence - significant percentage of world population is adopting vegetarian food habits - we must make an effort not to limit Jainism to ourselves but must tell the whole world the good about it
