  1. Ts.BAYARBAATAR Director of EAMongolian Power-2012 May. 2012 Government Implementing Agency ENERGY AUTHORITY Right Generation Structure of Integrated Energy System of Mongolia

  2. CONTENTS • Energy with consumption growth of Mongolia • Impact of solar and wind power stations on CES • Needs of HPP for regulating CES’s regime • Conclusion

  3. Mongolia’s Energy sector • Mongolian energy sector consists of five separate energy systems such as Western energy system, Altai-Uliastai energy system, Central energy system, Eastern energy system and a Southgobi independent part . There are 8 coal-fired thermal power plants, 2 small scale hydropower plants -Durgun HPP, Taishir hydropower plant, Altai-Uliastai diesel generation stations and other renewable energy sources . Generated electricity from above mentioned power stations is transmitted to consumers by five 220 kV substations and 1400 km transmission line further more than 30 substations 110 kV, 4240 km transmission line , over 3300 substation 0.4-35 kV 25000 km transmission lines

  4. Central energy system In 2011year: • Generated 4458 mlnkWh electricity • Imported 200 mlnkWh electricity, • Exported 21.5mlnkWh electricity , • Peak Load In Central region was 782 MW, • Supplied to costumers 3,485.6 mlnkWh electricity .

  5. Forecast electricity consumption of Mongolia , mln. kWh

  6. Projections of power plants to be constructed in the Central region TPP 5 in UB 820 MW HPP in Selenge river 300 MW Salkhit Wind farm 50MW Choir Wind farm 50MW Sainshand Wind farm 50MW Sainshand TPP >30MW Chandagana TPP 600 MW Baganuur TPP 270 MW Chandagana TPP 600 MW Tsaidam TPP 600 MW Buuruljuut TPP 600 MW Erdenetsogt TPP 600 MW

MONGOLIAN POWER-2012 Development Prospect of Power Sector – Projects to be implemented in the near future MINISTRY OF MINERAL RESOURCES AND ENERGY Darkhan,Erdenet CHP 35 MW extension Ulaanbaatar CHP#5 830 MW CHP#4 100 MW extension Baganuur TPP270 MW Telmen TPP 60 MW Chandgana TPP 600 MW Khotgor TPP 36 MW Dornod TPP 100 MW extention Shuren HPP300 MW Khushuut TPP 12-24 MW Choir Wind Farm 50 MW SalhitUul Wind Farm 50 MW Sainshand Wind Farm 52 MW Khanbogd Wind Farm 250 MW Tavantolgoi TPP 300 MW Oyutolgoi TPP 450 MW 15-16 May 2012, Ulaanbaatar

  8. The peak load and generating capacity of central energy system

  9. Renewable energy development strategy and goal • The Government of Mongolia has given one of the highest development priority to increase in using renewable energy. • Mongolian Parliament approved Renewable Energy Law /2005/ National program for Renewable energy /2007/ • Percentage of renewable energy source will be reached 20-25 % in 2020 as indicated in the National Program of Renewable energy approved by the Parliament of Mongolia. • In 2010, it was reached 4.25 %

  10. Solar and wind power stations to be constructed in the future • Bayanteeg SPP 7.8 MW • Sainshand SPP 50 MW

  11. Operational regime of Solar and wind sources /11-15th January/ • Installed capacity of Solar power station • Generation of Solar PS • Installed capacity of Wind power station • Generation of Wind PS

  12. The solar and wind source’s impact on CES • Daily demand • Installed capacity of Solar & Wind PP • Generation of Solar & Wind PP

  13. Utilization of border crossing run water

  14. Hydropower potential of largest rivers of Mongolia

  15. Hydropower projects to be implemented

  16. Feasibility of The Shuren hydropower Plant on the river Selenge • Water discharge 216-245 м3/sec • Crest length of dam 670-1200 м • Water head 40 м • Annual generation 600-1000 minkWh • Reservoir filling period 2 year • Shuren HPP will be located upper confluence with river Orkhon and it will not cause reducing Selenge water discharge. • Selenge is the biggest river of Mongolia which runs to waste through the border, has abundant water power resources and location advantages and so the priority should be given to hydropower.

  17. Conclusions • The unreliability of energy supply will affect on energy supply security , the national security of the country causing risk to be uneconomical , emergency • Construction of hydropower plant on the biggest river of Mongolia will ensure energy supply security by reducing import electricity having own regulatory and standby capacity as base for supporting regime of intermittent source such as wind power stations. • Construction of Shuren HPP on the river Selenge the percentage of renewable energy source will be reached up to 20-25 % as indicated in the National Program of Renewable approved by the Parliament of Mongolia.
