  2. Your ideas... • Allows for relig plurality • Cause of relig unrest • Allow wm larger role in their homes • Ch becomes a more pervasive personal force (Jesuits, confession, etc) • Widespread educ • Family becomes more cohesive unit • Relig persecution - for ppl of all different faiths • Paved the way for other Christ denominations to be formed

  3. For the middle class (humanist goals are furthered)

  4. Also: • New literature emerges • Church $ is now locally spent • Political rulers now want the church to support them - this is a POWER SHIFT! • Last time in the West, people identify themselves with religion rather than the nation-state • No religious unity in the West • Greater equality...well, some! • Individualism becomes stronger

  5. And: • Religion and the state are now tied together (not just the Church holding all of the power) • Calvin’s stress on the Protestant work ethic contributes to the development of the capitalist spirit • Growth of political liberty: if you can overthrow the Church because of tyrannical rule, why not rulers too?

  6. Criteria • How would you organize the impact of the Reformation? With a partner decide how to organize this information. • What is the most important impact of the Reformation? Why?
