  4. Features of the Castle • Bailey – the outerwall • Gatehouse • Portcullis - heavy wooden gate • Keep - safest part of the castle • Donjon (Dungeon)

  5. Living Conditions • Cold, drafty • Few decorations or comfortable furniture • Warmth provided by fireplace • Few glass windows

  6. Living Conditions • Lord and Lady had bedrooms in the keep • Servants slept on floors • Knights slept on tables • Garderobe • Bathed in a wooden tub of hot water
