  3. Overview of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act 2010 • Proposed rule was signed by Obama in Dec2010 and published Jan 2011 • Over 133,268 comments from Jan-Apr • Final rule Jan 2012 effective Jul 2012

Significance of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act 2010 • 32 million children participate daily • Obesity and food insecurity are dual threats to many of these children • Uses current nutrition science to establish guidelines • Last change was 1996 with School Meals Initiative • Six cent increase in reimbursement funded for the next two years ($18,000/yr)

Major Changes of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act 2010 • All districts go to Food Based Menu Planning • Age/Grade Groups (K-5, 6-8, 9-12) • Vegetables into sub groups • Whole grain requirement • Fluid milk requirements (no more whole or 2%) • New sodium requirements starting Jul 2014 • Zero trans fat • Reimbursable meal MUST contain a fruit or veggie

Budgeting Challenges forEUSD Child Nutrition • Addition of breakfast programs increased labor by $10,000/yr • Healthier snacks result in a $20k/yr revenue loss • In house caterings for meetings/inservices have decreased • Increased cost of food for providing healthier meals and participation drop for lunches • California has run out of money and stopped reimbursing for lunches in April for the last 3 years resulting in approx $2k in lost revenue per year

New for EUSD Child Nutrition • Launched “Gourmet Express” line of entrees which focus on providing upscale, restaurant quality food, while maintaining nutritional value. • Addition of bananas as a daily fruit offering. • Real fruit birthday smoothies in the classroom. • Increased and diversified offerings for breakfast resulting in a 2,000 meal increase through January

  8. New for EUSD Child Nutrition • New Snack Program for ASPIRE • Rotating salad bar at OK and OPE daily • Using student grown, organic produce in salad bar at OPE with OK next in line • Specialty pizzas launched weekly • Continuing to provide pizzas to Carlsbad

  9. Around the corner for EUSD Child Nutrition • Spring BBQ’s inviting parents to come have lunch with their kids • Valentines, St Patricks Day and Cinco de Mayo promotions • New Pizza flavor contest • The six cent increase in reimbursement will help close the gap starting in the 12/13 school year
