  1. Update from Nordic Heavy HaulPer-Olof Larsson-Kråik, Swedish Rail AdministrationThomas Nordmark, LKAB R&D

  2. Need for increased capacity

  3. Swedens 10 year strategic national transport plan– Parliament and Government; All transport modes calls for 417 billion SEK An additional 65 billion SEK in cofinancing and 15.6 billion SEK in track access fees (railway)1 USD$ = 0.8 Euro = 7 SEK

  4. Capacity constraints • 80 % increase in iron ore transportations Luleå – Riksgränsen 2010-2020, most of it before 2015 • Minor operations are in the plan, new meeting stations and extension of existing stations • New forecast 2015  capacity utilizition over 100% on Malmbanan • The capacity situation in the North is now stretched to the max • Low punctuality and hard to get more ore trains with today's infrastructure Capacity constraints on the Swedish railway 2010 (Source: Trafikverket Region Nord, 2011) Capacity constraints on the Swedish railway 2015 (Source: Trafikverket Region Nord, 2011)

  5. Expansion plans for LKAB • Increase haulage from 27 Mton to 50 Mton • Increase no. of train pairs from 14 to 23 per day • Increase axle load from 30 to 32,5 ton • Reduce cycle time • 2013 - 2020

  6. Efficient Train Operation On Line Driver Assistance System in operation since summer of 2012 Energy saving trend

  7. Maintenance – some challenges • More traffic – need for more track possession time for maintenance – gives less capacity! • More maintenance outside the summer period. • Technical solutions that minimalize maintenance. • Technical solutions that is easy to maintain. • Keep the track forces as low as possible. • Are the superstructure, 54 kg rail and wooden sleepers, strong enough? • Friction management in cold climate? • Controlling the wheel/rail interface. • New double track - 40 tons axel load & 16 ton/m? • Research and development will be important!
