  2. BACKGROUND PASSAGE OVERVIEW: Chapter 2 of John’s Gospel continues the theme of Jesus’ early interactions with various groups, including His first “sign,” that of turning water into wine at a wedding. OBEY JESUS (John 2:1-5): At a wedding in Cana, Jesus’ mother told Him that the family didn’t have enough wine for all the guests. Jesus cautioned His mother about her implied request to show His power at that time, so she told the servants to do whatever He instructed them. GROW IN FAITH (John 2:6-11): Jesus proceeded to miraculously turn water in six large containers into fine wine. This miracle served as a “sign” of Jesus’ glory. It strengthened the disciples’ faith in Him. MAKE WORSHIP GENUINE (John 2:12-17): After a brief visit with His family, Jesus went to Jerusalem. In the temple area, He saw people engaged more in the business of buying and selling than in worship. So Jesus upended the tables and drove out the merchants. RECOGNIZE JESUS’ AUTHORITY (John 2:18-25): When some Jews asked Jesus by what authority He acted, He replied with a prophecy about His resurrection power. His hearers didn’t understand the saying. Yet, while Jesus was in Jerusalem, others trusted in His name because of the miracles He did.

  3. WHAT NOW? MY MISSION • How will you put into action this week what you’ve learned in God’s Word about Jesus’ authority? • Choose to obey Him even in circumstance when you can’t know all the details of what will happen in the future. • Let the biblical examples of His power and authority increase your faith that He can fill all the empty areas in your life. • Repent of anything in your life that is keeping you from genuinely worshiping God, whether in your daily private time or in congregational worship at your place of worship.
