Purpose Written for those HR practitioners who: • Experience frustration as they work to implement a “diversity of thought” culture, but are not totally satisfied with the progress of their organizations; • Continue to utilize processes which have questionable R.O.I. and are not consistent with HR industry “best practices;” and • Desire to be true “Strategic Business Partners” as they seek to maximize credibility with executive leadership.

Methodology • Two-part blog published quarterly and archived on the SHRM Georgia State Council website. • Part I of the blog will identify and evaluate a widely accepted HR practice or diversity mindset. • Part II will provide a practical alternative (i.e., case studies, tools, best practices, etc.) that will allow HR to better align its processes with key organizational goals.

SHRM Update Legislation – House passed the “comp time” bill; allows employers to have flexibility to offer comp time at 1.5 rate to non-exempt employees; will have an uphill battle from this point SHRM Initiatives When Work Works – Georgia 2014 Target State – I will send letter to chapters - free presentation by SHRM – no travel expenses and no donation to Foundation expected (would like to group presentations to same timeframe – travel around state) Over 500 companies applied this year. Awards to be given soon to organizations that have adapted workflex as part of their benefits to their employees. A Team – continues to grow in Georgia

SHRM Affiliation Requirements SHRM Chapter Membership Requirements as of January 1, 2012 By December 31, 2016 25 SHRM members and51% of total membership must be SHRM members 3.5 years to meet the requirements • 450 chapters are already there! • 60 chapters need to get to 51% affiliation • 48 chapters need to get to 25 SHRM members • 26 chapters need to do both (Fortune Forty Team!)

  38. SHAPE - Strategic Initiatives Acceptable SHAPE initiatives will have a goal, strategies for reaching the goal, implementation information, and an impact or result. Unacceptable initiatives would be an educational program, operational items, and items without detail.

What was the goal? What else did the chapter do to support this goal? How did this task help meet that goal? What were the results?

Why?This is not an initiative, it is a statement of fact. What was the chapter trying to accomplish? What was done? How did the action impact the result? What was the result?

Rate this initiative Workforce Readiness “Devoted a monthly program on Workforce Readiness as the topic, obtained speakers, got HRCI credit approval and invited CHROs to come.” Yes or No? Incomplete!! Why?This can be part of an broader initiative but it is an activity. What is the chapters’ goal around WFR? How did this activity help meet that goal? What were the results?

  42. Is this a Strategic Initiative? Rate this initiative Membership “Our chapter set a membership goal to have a 5% increase. The chapter increased membership by 10.81% by utilizing various recruitment, marketing strategies, media releases and annual events. We utilized several marketing resources: we reached out to at-large SHRM members, small businesses, our own personal contacts, local chamber and media. We promoted membership on our website and to our conference attendees. We developed a brochure created to communicate the benefits of being a member. We also sent monthly meeting press releases to the media. Our chapter offered a special member incentive to join the chapter by June. This growth qualified us for Membership Superstar status.” Yes or No? Yes!! Why?Well written description of their goal, objectives, strategies and results. Written as if someone who doesn’t have any information can get it all here. Better? Tell us more about the brochure.

  43. Is this a Strategic Initiative? Rate this initiative College Relations “We made a renewed & focused effort to support the local student chapter in an effort to impact the future of HR. We provided opportunities for students to partner with chapter professionals and gain knowledge and insight into the effective management of HR. We did this by enabling our chapter board members served as mentors and were speakers at the student chapter events. This collaboration facilitated the exchange of insight and ideas based on the board members' work-related experiences and the theoretical and academic perspectives of the students. We have created a student board position to represent the voice of the students and believe that this strategy will result in future members and leaders of our chapter. It’s too early to know how many members will join but the chapter will be tracking it closely next year and hope to have at least 5 new members from this group join in our next membership year.” “Yes or No? Some tips Think big picture – ask “what are we trying to achieve and how will we get there?” Write it like someone reading it has no information but in an executive summary format Establish the goals, objectives, strategies and metrics – break it down Identify the action items, owner, timetable Hold the leaders accountable for results Report the outcome
