  2. What does MOFAT do? Overseas Diplomatic Missions Headquarters - Commands diplomatic missions overseas - Establishes and implements Korea’s foreign policy Embassies ※ About 1,200 Korean diplomats are currently working in 109 embassies, 42 consulate-generals, and 5 permanent missions. Consulate-Generals • Negotiate and tighten relations with the government of the host country • Protect Koreans in the host country and promote Korean culture Permanent Missions • Protect Koreans in the host country • Promote bilateral relations through economic and trade activities • Represent Korea in international organizations such as the UN, OECD, or WTO 01

Various Diplomatic Activities (1) Global Network MOFAT supports Korean businesses’ overseas operations by establishing a global FTA network, and paves the way for securing energy resources and low-carbon green growth. MOFAT develops “New Asia” diplomacy aimed at strengthening cooperation with Asian countries, and extends Korea’s diplomatic networks by fostering cooperation with the Middle East, Africa, Central and South Americas, and the EU. MOFAT consolidates peace and security on the Korean Peninsula by strengthening cooperation with neighboring countries such as the US, China, Japan, and Russia, and seeks peaceful solutions to the North Korean nuclear issue.   4. Various Diplomatic Activities (2) MOFAT contributes to the promotion of world peace and poverty reduction through ODAs, and PKO and PRT activities. MOFAT introduces foreign countries to Korean culture and vice versa, implements policy aimed at enhancing Korea’s national image. Korea’s Contribution to the International Community Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) MOFAT’s subsidiary body in charge of Korea’s grant-type aid • Dispatches volunteers to countries in need of assistance and cooperates to help contribute to their economic, social, and cultural development. • A total of 6,300 Korean volunteers have been dispatched to 53 countries • for 19 years since 1991. • 1,700 Korean volunteers are conducting volunteer activities in 45 • countries as of March, 2011. 09
