  2. Foreign Policy Lesson Focus Question: What is the overall goal of America’s Foreign Policy? Learning Target: I, the student, can describe what Foreign Policy is and how it can effect our relations with other countries. President Obama was seen shaking hands with Raul Castro of Cuba. Why did some call this a foreign policy error? 

  3. Foreign Policy Defining Foreign Policy. Write your definition in your journal. Volunteers to tell us what you wrote in your journal? Why do you think our personal definitions can be so different? We will take a look at several foreign policy events. Keep your journal handy.

Foreign Policy In 1970, Chile elected a socialist leader by a plurality (relative majority, received more votes than his rivals, but not a majority of all the votes cast) by the name of Salvador Allende. Salvador Allende immediately nationalized all of Chile’s national resources. Write down in your journal what you think the U.S. foreign policy response was. Write down possible ramifications of your guess. Finally talk to your table-mates about your answers.

  5. Foreign Policy 1951: The Prime minister of Iran, Mohammad Mosaddegh, Ended the rule of the Shah (king) of Iran to solidify Iran as a democracy. He also nationalized Iran’s oil reserves, essentially kicking out foreign oil companies, mainly one British company, known today as BP (Gulf oil spill. Yeah, those guys.) Write down what you think the U.S. foreign policy makers decided to do about this. Write down possible ramifications your response might have globally Discuss your answers with your table.

  6. Foreign Policy The Suez Crisis. The Suez Canal connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea. It was completed in 1871. The project, by 1875, was owned by private firms in both England and France. In 1956, Egyptian president Gamal-Abdel Nasser Nationalized the canal. Israel invades the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt responds, and France and England both join Israel. Write down what you think U.S. Foreign Policy makers decided to do about this. What possible outcomes may happen with your foreign policy strategy. Write it down. Discuss your answers with your table.
