  1. MANS NEED RIGHTEOUSNESS Man having rebelled against God in unrighteousness, stands in need of righteousness.

  2. Self Righteousness • Man’s need isNOT self-righteousness. Mat 5:20 For I tell you that unless yourrighteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

  3. MANS NEED RIGHTEOUSNESS • The Righteousness of God is required. • Rom 10:1-4 Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved, For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Since they did not know the righteousnessthat comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. Christ is the end of the laws so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

  4. GOD RIGHTOUSNESS OR SELF • How is your righteousness, are you more righteous than the Pharisees? After all the Pharisees were the keepers of the law, the religious leaders of the day. We need to see a shift in our attitudes, I do, do good works, but not to earn salvation, or righteousness, but out of appreciation for God, because he has saved me, not to be saved.

  5. MANS NEED RIGHTEOUSNESS • Gal 2:20 & 21 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could begained through the law, Christ died for nothing. • RIGHTEOUSNESS IS NOT GAINED BY MY GOOD WORKS, BUT BY FAITH IN GOD AND THE ALL SUFFICIENT WORK OF THE CROSS OF CHRIST!

  6. DENIAL OF THE CROSS • FOR ME TO SAY I DO THIS AND THAT, AND I AM NOT A BAD PERSON, IS TO UNDERMINE THE NEED YOU HAVE FOR A CRUCIFIED, RESURRECTED SAVIOR. AFTER ALL HE DIDN’T HAVE MUCH SAVING TO DO, I’M NOT SO BAD! IF I COULD KEEP THE LAW, I HAVE NO NEED OF A SAVIOR AND CHRIST WENT THROUGH ALL HE WENT THROUGH FOR NOTHING! I AM MY OWN SAVIOR! DOES THIS MAKE ANY SENCE TO YOU? ARE YOU FOLLOWING MY LOGIC IN THIS MATTER?

  7. MANS NEED RIGHTEOUSNESS • All men are sinners, and in need of righteousness. Not a righteousness from works, which lead to death, but a righteousness from God. It has to be a righteousness from God because we cannot produce a righteousness to the standard of Gods, which is what will be required.

  8. MANS NEED RIGHTEOUSNESS • The word translated “Righteousness” is from the Greek word “dike” which is the same word translated Just, Justify, or Justification. Righteousness and Justification are from the exact same Greek word. • The word means: The character or quality of being right or just. • It is the state of being, when one is justified.

  9. MANS NEED RIGHTEOUSNESS • The declaring (by God) of one to be righteous is by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus, and his completed work on the cross. JUSTIFICATION, and RIGHTEOUSNESS are part of the work of the Cross of Christ, and we need to have complete faith in that sacrifice. The all sufficient REDEMPTION provided by that one act to make one righteous, with a righteousness provided by God. Jesus became sin for us, so we could have his righteousness!

MANS NEED RIGHTEOUSNESS • To God righteousness describes His absolute moral perfection: God himself is the standard of Righteousness. • This is exspecially true for nations, as well as individuals, the USA seems to have thrown out God and no longer has his standard of righteousness. Now with out this standard anything goes. We have seen the bar lowered again, and again.

  11. RIGHTOUSNESS IS A GIFT FROM GOD • Rom 5:15-17 But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! Again the gift of God is not like the result of the one man’s sin; The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought Justification.

  12. Remember from lesson 3 slide 7 • In lesson 3 slide 7 I said we would come back to the point about you are not under law, but under grace! It is Gods GRACE that will see us through, and make us into what God wants us to be. • GRACE is Gods underserved gift or kindness bestowed upon us. We can do nothing to earn it, we don’t deserve it! Except it by FAITH!

  13. MANS NEED RIGHTEOUSNESS • The Righteousness of God is apart from Law: • Rom 3:21 But now a righteousness from God apart from law, has been made known, to which the law and the prophets testify. • Rom 9:31&32 but Israel, who pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it. Why not?

  14. Rom 9:31&32 • Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone. • The Scribes, and Pharisees practiced a form of self righteousness, and your righteousness must, and will exceed theirs, because yours must come from God himself.

  15. THE GREATEST EXPRESSION OF “GOD’S” RIGHTEOUSNESS IS SEEN AT THE CROSS OF CALVARY • Rom 3:25 God presented him (JESUS) as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, (remember justice and righteousness come from the same word.) because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished.

  16. REVEILED BY THE GOSPEL • Rom 1:16 & 17 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes; first for the Jew then for the Gentile. For inthe gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written; “The righteous will live by FAITH.”

  17. RIGHTEOUSNESS IS UNTO ETERNAL LIFE • Rom 5:21 so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. • Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life “IN CHRIST JESUS” our Lord. • Rom 8:1&2 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are “IN CHRIST” because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.

  18. MANS NEED RIGHTEOUSNESS • Man is in need of righteousness, the very righteousness of God. God has provided this righteousness by his grace for those who have faith in Jesus and his finished work on the cross. This must be a faith that has total trust, confidence, and reliance on Jesus and his sacrifice. So much so that they are willing to be obedient to the Gospel. 2 Thess 1:8 He will punish those who do not know God, and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. (More on this later)

  19. WHAT THE PASSAGE SAYS • This passage (2 Thess 1:8) says two things: • 1. He will punish those who do not know God. (How does one know God?) • 2. He will punish those who do not obeythe Gospel. A particular teaching taught in the New Testament, by the Apostles, and the Church. (How does one obey the Gospel?)

  20. MANS NEED RIGHTEOUSNESS • God calls the not things as though they are. 1 Cor 1:28 He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things – and the things that are not-to nullify the things that are. • God has called the Gentiles Children of God, and Sons. God has called the unrighteous – RIGHTEOUS!!! God has made the unholy HOLY.
