  1. Paving Paths: Can You Lay Indian Sandstone Paving on Sand? Installing new patio slabs can be challenging, particularly if you have never done it before! Errors in the laying process are quite common and can result in significant financial, time, and effort losses. This equation holds more true when it comes to Indian sandstone paving slabs. Why? Because Indian sandstone is a naturally occurring stone that is mined throughout India. Indian sandstone is a trendy material for driveways, outdoor pool surrounds, and garden patios because of its natural beauty and adaptability. However, if it is not laid correctly, its beauty will not be visible. Moreover, it might not always have very sharp edges, which also requires careful consideration. It needs mortar or adhesive, just like any other paver, to be sturdy and solid. Also, it should not become uneven or exhibit discolouration below. Having said that, one of our most common queries is, "Can I lay my Indian sandstone paving stones on sand?" The short answer is, very frankly, NO, JUST DON'T. While it is technically feasible and is something that many people do, we do not advise laying your paving slabs on sand. This blog will tell you why!

  2. Why should I not lay Indian sandstone paving slabs on sand? In other words, a bed of gravel and sand offers a far weaker base than a mortar bed. This implies that the paving slabs can easily begin to break after a short time, usually around a year. In some cases, you could even need to replace them soon. That may be costly, time-consuming, and an annoyance, mainly after you have put so much effort into installing them in the first place. After getting your slabs from sandstone paving suppliers, sand and gravel may seem like a good DIY project. DIY might be initially less expensive, but in the long term, it will end up costing you more. Instead, we highly suggest using cement or mortar! Why should you use cement or mortar as a base? Cement gives your sandstone slabs enough hold on the foundation. If you install the pavers without it, the slabs will likely come loose as soon as it rains. Hence, it is essential to create the best possible foundation, paying particular attention to drainage and finish so it will hold up well in bad weather. In this case, cement is helpful because it functions as a binder, setting, hardening, and adhering to other materials to bind them together. It is often mixed with gravel or sand or occasionally both. When sand is used as a mixer, mortar is created. Is there anything else you could do to secure your natural stone paving slabs to the ground when you use mortar? You must add water; otherwise, the cement will not set, and the mortar will become too brittle to be used. The mortar used to lay sandstone pavers should be a semi-dry mixture of 5 parts sharp sand to 1 part cement. This is not the same as the 10:1 mixture used to make concrete flags. The thickness of Indian sandstone slabs varies by +/- 5 mm. As a result, there can be a 10mm variation in slabs. This variation, known as "tolerance," is a recognised feature of natural stone pavers. Parting words! Indian sandstone paving slabs are quite popular because of their many great qualities, which will offer you the durability and appearance of a much more costly sandstone like Yorkstone for a fraction of the price. However, everything relies on how they are laid out.
