  2. Defensive Philosophy • We do not react (You attack) • We are the aggressor with an attitude • We must be disciplined • Totally unselfish • Read and attack • We will be different because we will be multiple defense 3, 4, 5, 6

Defensive Terms • Strong side / Weak side refer to offensive formation and not the defensive ability on that side. • Field / Boundary will also be used with formations and location of ball. • Strong side is toward tight end side of offensive formation. • Weak side is toward split of offensive formation. • Strong side is favorable to run or pass • Weak side is favorable to pass first run second as far as defense is concerned. • Field is wide side of field. • Boundary is short side of field used in secondary coverage’s.

  7. Huddle Formation for Defense C B B C D E N E D M S • Nose will find ball after each play, he will raise hand and call “defense”. Huddle will form around him. Nose will position himself 3- 4 yards form ball, facing the ball. • Front line will be bent over with hands on knees. • Back line will be between front line with hands place on backs of front line. • Calls will be made by Mike and Safety after they receive defensive call from sideline. • Safety will call down distance and defensive secondary coverage. • Mike will call stunts • To break huddle mike will say “ready” and with the clap of hands and the “word of that week” -“Dutch, “Defense”, and Pride” will be shouted and huddle will break.

  8. No Huddle Defense • Stunts and coverage’s will be predetermined by offensive formation. • A designated line backer and secondary person will confirm formation of the offence then shout the “Stunt and coverage”. • Creative words may be used each week to communicate the coverage and stunts to each other aloud "Bison Blue", “Check O”. • The line and bats should inform all player of down and distance in “No Huddle”. • “TALK “ “TALK “ “TALK “ “LISTEN “LISTEN “LISTEN “ • Information that must be known by all defensive players before snap of the ball. • Offensive formations (Dbl tight)(Split L or R)(Pro)(Trips)(Slot R or L) (Ace backfield)(Empty set)( 2Back set) • Down and Distance • Responsibility (Gap) (Area) • Stunt and Coverage

Rules for (BASE) Defensive Line – 1st Level • Ends – 3 point stance • Alignment – 5 technique • Outside eye of offensive tackle • Inside foot align in center of offensive tackle • When no offensive end (align inside foot with out side foot of tackle) • Keep (head or hand) within one foot from line of scrimmage. • Responsibility • Penetrate through offensive tackle and square up and cover C gap. • Keys • Read tackle’s movement • Be ready for double team from end and tackle • While seeing the nearest backs movement

Rules for (BASE) Defensive Line – 1st Level • Nose Guard – 3 point stance • Alignment – 0 technique • Head up on center • (Head or Hand) one foot from line of scrimmage • Responsibility • Rip through centers block and play (A) gap to (A) gap depending on stunt and ball carrier direction • Keys • Centers blocking direction to the nearest back (ball movement)

Rules for (BASE) Line Backers – 2nd Level Mike (Middle Backers) - 2 point stance Alignment – 00 technique Head up on center Feet parallel with a toe to heal stager 3 yards to 5 yards off LOS Responsibility Attack the Line of Scrimmage from B gap to B gap depending on stunt or ball carrier direction plugging any opening. pass coverage depends on if it is man to man, or zone coverage Keys Guard- Fullback- Quarterback triangle to identify flow of football .

Rules for (BASE) Line Backers – 2nd Level Bats - (Sam and Will) 2 point stance – Inside Backers Alignment – 40 technique • Head up on center of the offensive tackle • Feet parallel with a toe to heal stager • 3 yards to 5 yards off LOS Responsibility • Attack the line of scrimmage at the B or C gap on your side depending on (offensive tackles block and ball carrier direction) or (stunt being called). • The PASS COVERAGE depends on if ( Man to Man, or Zone (hook curl area) Keys • Tackle, near back and quarterback triangle • Guards to identify football flow Name for Bats • Sam on short side of formation • Will on wide side of formation (Optional)

Rules for (BASE) Line Backers - 2nd Level Dogs - 2 point stance – Outside Backers Alignment • Verses Tight End - 80 technique • 2 yards outside the end man on line of scrimmage 3-5 yards deep • Verses Tackle - (Split End) 70 technique • 3 yards outside the end man on line of scrimmage 4-6 yards deep • Verses Slot - • Align on slot 7 yards deep with inside foot of slot man Responsibility • On running plays towards you - attack line of scrimmage to secure the D gap, has pitch man on option plays • On running plays away – Shuffle Slow down line towards play securing from your D gap to opposite A gap for a cut back by runner or reverse play • On pass – depending on stunt or coverage if in man to man coverage usually the 2nd man from outside (#2 man) in zone (depending what zone coverage) you would have flat (3) or hook curl (24) Keys • End man on the line of scrimmage to near back • The Dog is both linebacker and defensive back • Must read , react and attack at line of scrimmage • React to pass coverage

Rules for (BASE) Secondary – 3rd Level Corners - 2 point stance – Field (wide) or Boundary (short) Sides Alignment • Align to the # 1 receiver to their side, 7-8 yards deep (when Press is called 1 yard deep) with inside foot align with outside foot of receiver, Outside foot should be up in front of inside foot. Responsibility • Pass coverage first, in (zone)-flat or deep third in (man to man)-cover the #1 receiver, with 3 drop steps first and read react, and attack ball carrier on running plays. • Must be able to open field tackle and take one leading fullback back or pulling lineman. Keys • The alignment should allow the corner to key quarterback and receiver

Rules for (BASE) Secondary - 3rd Level Safety - 2 point stance Alignment • 9-12 yards deep on the A gap to the two receiver side on an even set (align 9-12 yards deep equally distant from the # 1 receivers). Responsibility • Pass coverage first (with 3 step drop) Zone (deep middle 3rd on cover 3, or ½ field on cover 2) #2 or #3 man (depending on man coverage) Attack the line of scrimmage on run plays.(run the alley to the ball carrier.) Make open field tackles. Keys • The Quarterback and ball movement. Receiver to QB on man to man coverage – on zone near receiver to quarterback
