  3. What is INSPIRE? “Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community”

  4. INSPIRE • INSPIRE lays down general rules to establish an infrastructure for spatial information in Europe for the purposes of Community environmental policies and policies or activities which may have an impact on the environment. • INSPIRE is based on the infrastructures for spatial information established and operated by the Member States • INSPIRE is a distributed infrastructure • INSPIRE does not require collection of new spatial data • INSPIRE does not affect existing Intellectual Property Rights

Comprehensive data inventory (Monitoring & Reporting IR) Facilitate data discovery through standardised discoveryservices & metadata (IR on Network Services & Metadata) Data sharing (IR on Data and Service Sharing) Facilitate data access by allowing standardised view, download and transformation (IR on Network Services) Facilitate data use and interoperability by adopting common cross-domain models to exchange data (IR on Data Interoperability) INSPIRE in a nutshell

INSPIRE in WB countries • Different stages of EU integration but all countries see membership as their main political and development objective • INSPIRE is (together with all EU acquis) part of the negotiation process towards EU • INSPIRE Directive requires actions • NSDI establishment in all WB countries is under the responsibility of NMCAs • Cooperation among NMCAs as a driver for the NSDI initiatives in the WB region
