  2. Reporting commands, requests.. • For reported commands, requests, offers and advice, use verb + person + to + infinitive • Examples: • They toldus to go away. (command) • They askedme to look after their cat. (request) • I advisedmy friend to sleep early. (advice)

  3. 2. Don’t use “say”! • In commands and requests and advice: “say” is notpossible. With commands use: tell With requests use: ask • Examples: • He said to me to go away. (x) • He told me to go away. (√) • He said to me to clean the window. (x) • He asked me to clean the window. (√)

  4. 3. Negative commands To report negative commands: usenotbeforeto. Examples: Don’t write on the board.  He told me nottowrite on the board. Don’t tell anyone.  He told me notto tell anyone.

  5. 4. Ask & Tell

  6. A. Tell A. We use tell in both reported statements and reported commands. But the form is different. Examples: They told us that they were traveling. He told me what had happened. both are statements: verb + person + (that)… He told me to be quite. They told us to leave the room. Both are commands: verb + person + to + infinitive

  7. B. Ask B. Ask is similar to tell. It is used for both reported questions and reported requests. But the form is different. Examples: She asked him how old he was. I asked the student why she had come late. both are questions: verb + person + …. He asked me to open my bag. They asked her to wash the dishes. Both are requests: verb + person + to + infinitive
