Phd Target • To conduct and publish scientific research, based on the department's research plan and in consultation with the doctoral thesis supervisor or his/her assistant, with the aim of contributing to the development of scientific knowledge and understanding in a particular field of research, proved by the conferral of a doctorate within a specified period.

Collective labour Agreement www.unimaas.nl This temporary appointment is based upon article 2.2 under 1 related to article 2.3 under 3 clause b and article 2.3 under 10 of the CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten (regulation concerning the legal status of university personnel) and lasts until «EindeContr».­ The position is in principle one of 4 years. Based on article 6.8 of the CAO NU a PhD Training and Supervision Plan should be delivered before datum. Based on a positive evaluation[i] at the end of the first year your appointment will be extended for three years, up to and including datum. Performance interviews will take place once a year. This appointment can be ended before the final date, by both parties, regarding the CAO regulations. For the text of the CAO NU please refer to the website of the VSNU (www.vsnu.nl).

  6. First year Assessment In the ninth month of your appointment an assessment will be held in the presence of the personnel officer, the department head and your supervisor(s). In preparation of this meeting you will have to submit a report, which includes: • - the progress of your research over the first nine months; • - the education received in the first nine months; • - your teaching activities in the first nine months; • - the research plan (more) in detail, with research problems and methods; • - time-table for the following three years regarding research and education; • - an outline of the chapters of your dissertation.

  7. Performance Management • Positive appraisal within 1 year (9 months), extension with 3 years. • Appraisal with (co)promotor(s) , HR consultant • Yearly development interview • Optional Career coaching interview

Cafeteria Planwww.unimaas.nl • “CAO keuzemodel”: • Application from october 1st till December 1st for the coming year • Sources: Leave, Salary, Holiday allowance, End of Year bonus,… • Purpose: Extra hours leave (“levensloop”), Prolongation maternity leave, Study leave, Saving plan, Sabbatical, Salary, Extra pension, BIKE, Union contribution, Travel expenses • Rules: Input max 80 Hrs of leave (10 days), agreement of manager

The Bike 2 scenario’s: • With UM allowance €340,- (once each 5 year) • Without UM allowance (once each 3 years) Payment through (use of Form): • Payment with net Salary • Monthly payment (x max 36 month) • Hours of leave (5% of Gross Salary per Month Full time) • Prerequisites: 11 months before end of contract and working at least 10 hrs/ week.

Steps to take • Gather “Dutch” forms: Verklaring in het kader van fietsenregeling (with or without UM), CAO keuzemodel, Bestelformulier fiets • Go to HR front office with signed, completed forms. HR will send this to Administrative Service Center (ASC). • You get a message from the shop (informed by ASC) after two weeks… • Enjoy!

Leave • Depending on 36/38/40 hrs workweek • Standard 248hrs of leave (+/- 96 hrs) for 1 fte. • Max 120hrs of leave can be transported to the next year for 1 fte. • Illness during leave is not registered as leave however illness longer than 6 months (including maternity leave) will decrease the amount of standard leave. • End of contract or dismissal means losing hours of leave…

  12. Tax issueswww.belastingdienst.nl • During PhD you are allowed to deduct (threshold 500€-15.000€): • Cost of books/ literature • “Write off” from e.g. your computer • Not allowed to deduct: • Interests of study loan • Expenses like housing, clothes • Travel/ housing costs • Study trip expenses • Office facilities
