  1. Fossil Skulls and Teeth

  2. What is a fossil? • A fossil is any evidence of past life on our earth. • Fossils are very rare. This is because fossils only form under the right circumstances. To become a fossil a plant or animals usually needs to have hard parts, such as bones, teeth, shells, or tough wood. • The animal or plant must also be buried quickly to prevent it from decaying.

  3. How do fossils form?

  4. What can skulls and teeth tell us?

  5. Teeth tell us . . . • About diet (What did the animal eat?) • Age (Does it have baby teeth? Are the teeth worn down?) • Health (Does it have cavities? Signs of stress in the animal’s life?)

  6. Investigation! • Compare and contrast the teeth in both the jaw and skull • Draw conclusions about the size of the animal • What might the head have looked like? • What was the diet like?
