  1. 4th Philae Post-Launch Workshop Philae Status and News Venezia; 30st of March 2009

  2. Overview • Philae In-flight Activities • Ground Activities • LCC Funding Situation

  3. Flight Events • In 2008/09 Philae was switched on during 6 operational blocks: • Šteins Rehearsal (Apr 2008) • Active Checkout PC8 (July 2008) • Šteins Flyby (September 2008) • COSAC/CIVA Contingency Slot (November 2008) • Passive Checkout PC9 (January 2009) • Thermal Characterization (February 2009) • Operations Activities successful • Problems / Areas of concern (mostly known problems) • Increased secondary battery discharge • Temperature gradients inside Lander higher than estimated • DPU1 booting problem at low temperatures • ESS converter temperatures • Certain deficiencies in CDMS S/W 6.98 (compared to 7.0) • COSAC HV problems with new SW not understood

  4. Philae In-flight Operations (I) • Šteins Flyby Rehearsal • Test of Solar generator (successful) • Shadowing affects lead to “initial confusion”… • Active Payload Checkout #8 (July 2008) • Maintenance: • New operations: • Upload of CDMS S/W 6.98 • Problems: • CDMS • COSAC • CIVA • APX

  5. Status of CDMS S/W • Version 6.98 successfully uploaded in PC8 • It was recommended by the last LOWG#12 to upload final SW version 8.0 prior to DSH (deep space hibernation) in PC12 • Workshops for SDL and LTS established; inputs to CDMS SW still pending; due end of April(next SDL/LTS meetings 27/28-April 2009) • Several mission critical aspects need to be taken care of • CDMS SW delivery planned for September 2009 • Verification period September to November 2009 • SW Upload in April 2010

  6. Philae In-flight Operations (II) • Šteins Flyby • ROMAP, SESAME and MUPUS operational • ROMAP detects no magnetic signatures due to asteroid • SESAME and MUPUS perform successfully calibration • COSAC/CIVA Contingency Slot (CNT2) • “old” COSAC S/W uploaded • COSAC seems to work nominal (again) with pre-PC#8 SW • COSAC H/W apparently ok • Problem not understood • planned CIVA SW downgrade abandoned • CIVA worked well (no dummy images sent) • Problem during PC#8 not understood

  7. Philae In-flight Operations (III) • Passive Checkout PC#9 • Standard Procedure • Add. APXS measurement • Thermal Characterization (THC2) • Contribution to Lander Thermal Characterization • Calibration measurements for SESAME and MUPUS

  8. Ground Activities • GRM refinement • Open work for ADS: EQM model exchange;FM01 model implementation planned to be finished by May 2009 GRM is used for all Flight ops preparation !! • Development tests for next CDMS S/W v8.0 • Development tests ongoing;SW v8.0 verification period expected for Sep - Nov 2009 • LCC Status • Upgrade of ESA interface (PDOP) ongoing • DAVIS (upgrade development delayed, but continues) • SCrOP, Annex G The document provides an overview on the status of all Philae Cruise Phase requirements • Last version V1.5, 11th of December 2008, distributed to RSOC/RMOC and Lander Team • Lander Software Simulator • upgrade delayed due to priority on CDMS SW v8.0 development, but continues

  9. LCC Funding Situation • New Project plan, based on results of independent review from September 2007 now agreed • Shared LCC funding between DLR Agency and DLR R&D • New staff in the LCC team • Jens Biele (Payload Management) • Ed Trollope (Lander Simulator, Ops preparation (Šteins, Lutetia)) • Christian Krause (RLGS Support) • Koen Geurts (GRM, Ops preparation) • Hans-Herbert Fischer (LCCS support, (SESAME) • Franziska Lenski (QA at MUSC)
