The cells are then examined under a microscope for any abnormalities that could indicate cervical cancer. Pap smears are an important part of cervical cancer screening. Cervical cancer is a highly preventable cancer, but it is important to catch it early when it is most treatable. Pap smear kits are available for purchase online and at some pharmacies. They are also available at most healthcare provider offices. What is in a Pap smear kit? A Pap smear kit typically contains the following items:  A sterile speculum: This is a medical device used to open the vagina so that the cervix can be seen. A cervical brush: This is a small, soft brush that is used to collect cells from the cervix. A glass slide: This is where the cells will be placed and examined under a microscope. A preservative solution: This is a liquid that helps to keep the cells fresh so that they can be examined accurately.    How to use a Pap smear kit To use a Pap smear kit, follow these steps: 1.Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. 2.Remove the speculum from the packaging and open it. 3.Insert the speculum into your vagina and gently open it. 4.Use the cervical brush to collect cells from the cervix. 5.Place the cells on the glass slide. 6.Apply the preservative solution to the cells. 7.Place the glass slide in the packaging that came with the kit. 8.Label the packaging with your name and date of birth. 9.Take the Pap smear kit to your healthcare provider's office. When to get a Pap smear The American Cancer Society recommends that women start getting Pap smears at age 25. Women ages 25-65 should get a Pap smear every three years. Women ages 65

  2. and older can stop getting Pap smears if they have had three normal Pap smears in a row and have not had any abnormal results in the past 10 years. However, women who have certain risk factors for cervical cancer may need to get Pap smears more often. These risk factors include:      Having a family history of cervical cancer Having HPV (human papillomavirus) Having HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) Smoking Having a weakened immune system What to expect after a Pap smear After a Pap smear, your healthcare provider will send the glass slide to a laboratory to be examined. The laboratory will look for any abnormal cells that could indicate cervical cancer. If your Pap smear results are normal, you will need to get another Pap smear in three years. If your Pap smear results are abnormal, your healthcare provider will discuss your options with you. These options may include additional testing, such as a biopsy, or treatment, such as cryotherapy or laser ablation. Conclusion A Pap smear kit is a simple and effective way to detect cervical cancer. If you are due for a Pap smear, be sure to schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider today.
