  3. Heroin • Heroin is the illegal drug made from the opium poppy plants. • Heroin often goes by Smack, dope, and brown sugar. • Dope Can be injected, snorted or smoked either way gives a potent high. (“Heroin”)

  4. What’s the most popular technique??? • The most popular way to use heroin is to “shoot” it into your blood stream with a needle. • This produces a “high” within 6-8 seconds • John will now show how to properly “shoot” heroin.

  5. Side effects of heroin • As heroin travels through your bloodstream, it ultimately affects the entire human body.

  6. How does it affect your brain? • Your brain is a precious organ in your body it controls things such as your heart beat and respiration, and because it is so important, it doesn't allow just anything to enter its pace. • Special epithelial cells line the capillaries in the brain and spinal cord keeping things in the blood stream out. • Effects the Blood Brain Barrier

  7. Blood Brain Barrier • Heroin is able to slip through the blood brain barrier and inside the brain it is converted to morphine.

  8. Blood Brain Barrier • BBB • BBB • Here are some links about the blood brain barrier and an animation demonstrating what happens.

  9. Short term effects • Rush • Vomiting • Sweating • Itching • Heavy limbs • Partial sedation (What 30 Days of Heroin Does to You)

  10. Long term effect • Collapsed veins • Exposure to infectious diseases • Addiction • Blocked veins and arteries

  11. Origin of Heroin • Heroin was actually made to curve morphine addiction in the late 1800’s • But it was then found out that heroin was actually more additive than morphine and was made illegal. • Afghanistan is the worlds largest producer of heroin.

  12. Naloxone Naloxone is the opiate overdose antidote. It works by blocking the opium receptors in the drain so the drug wont work anymore (“Youth RISE for Reducing Drug Related Harm”)

  13. Project Lazarus • Seeks to help release Naloxone for free so its in the hands of more people. • Overdose • Here is a link to show you what an overdose on heroin looks like. • Shepherd of the Hills." (“Shepherd of the Hills.“)

  14. Cocaine • Cocaine is a highly addictive stimulative drug • It is illegal to possess, produce, or distribute cocaine for non-medicinal and non-government-sanctioned purposes in almost every country. • Commonly known as “blow” (“New Yorkers”)

  15. How Cocaine is made.. • Cocaine is manufactured from the leaves of the coca plant. • The coca plant is commonly found in numerous South American countries. • Cocaine is synthesized from the leaves of the coca plant to form a paste. (Infoplease)

  16. “Paste” • To make the paste, there is a process of extracting the cocaine that includes the use of toxic chemicals. • This paste is further cooked and cut with adulterant substances to make it into “street level” cocaine. • Once cocaine is constructed into street level cocaine, it is finally able to be sold by drug dealers and used by their customers. (“Profile”)

  17. What’s the most popular technique?? • Cocaine can be injected, snorted or smoked • The most popular way to get a “buzz” or “high” off cocaine is to snort it. • John will now show you the proper way to snort cocaine. (“International Day”)

  18. Side Effects of Cocaine • As cocaine travels through your bloodstream, it also affects the entire human body.

  19. How does it affect your heart? • Cocaine increases heart rate and blood pressure while constricting the arteries supplying blood to the heart • This can result in a heart attack, even if you are young and do not possess any heart problems. • Cocaine can also cause a deathly abnormal heartbeat called arrhythmia.

  20. How does it affect your brain? • Cocaine can constrict blood vessels in the brain, causing strokes and seizures. • The use of cocaine can also lead to bizarre or violent behavior.

  21. What else can be affected?? • Snorting cocaine damages the nose and sinuses. • Smoking crack cocaine irritates and damages the lungs.

  22. The Daily Tarheel • Carrboro sees a 29 percent increase in cocaine-related arrests between 2010 and 2011 • Chapel Hill and Carrboro have seen a combined 16 cocaine-related arrests in 2012, eight of those for selling. • “Finding drug dealers usually isn’t too difficult,” • The Daily Tarheel

  23. Cocaine Genius • The man who introduced the U.S. to cocaine in the 1970’s was George Jung • From Massachusetts • Nicknamed “Boston George” • Responsible for 85% of the cocaine smuggled into the U.S. from Columbia (“CapeLinks Blog”)

  24. His luck ran out….. • Jung was arrested in Massachusetts in 1987 at his mansion on Nauset Beach, near Chatham.  • He skipped bail with his family but very quickly became involved in another deal. • He was betrayed by a pilot of his acquaintance. (“Blow”)

  25. Currently George Jung is incarnated in the Federal Correctional Institute in Texas, after a transfer from Otisville Federal Prison, New York. • His projected release date is November 27, 2014. • Which is about 580 days from now….. Where is he now? (“Boston George”)

  26. “Blow” • Jung became famous to the big public in 2001 after his life story was portrayed in the hit movie “Blow” • Starring  Johnny Depp as Jung and Penélope Cruz as Jung’s Mexican wife.

  27. “Blow” cont. • To get familiar with his movie character, Johnny Depp visited Jung in federal prison. (“George Jung vs. Johnny Depp”)

  28. What’s next for George? • Many people, including ourselves, are asking questions about George Jung and if he is a changed man. • Will he continue his coke smuggling ways? • Will the U.S. experience an increase in drug trafficking of cocaine?

  29. The next step in his life • All of these questions will be answered when he walks as a free man. • We hope he has changed for his family’s sake. (“DRUG SEIZURES”)
