  2. Mini Lesson • Similes and metaphors compare two unlike things to make an original and vivid image. Similes use “like” or “as” to make the comparison. Metaphors do not. (“a tornado in twirling tights!”) • What are the author’s experiences in the “Where I’m From” poem in your packet? How do they compare with your experiences? Writer’s Work Time • Title a page in your notebooks “Where I’m From.” • Jot at least two ideas for the categories below including similes and metaphors: • Objects at home • Places in my neighborhood • Sayings • Family Foods • Draft your “Where I’m From” self-portrait based on these ideas.
