  2. MIRRORS • In thriller films, mirrors are used to show the audience what the character truly feels about themselves. It can also be used to show the darkness within a character, it could also show what they fear. • Example of films that use mirrors are, • The Dark Mirror (1946 Robert Siodmak) • Black Swan (2010 Darren Aronofsky)

  3. SHADOWS • Shadows are an easy way to add eeriness to a thriller film because it shows that somebody is creeping around in the darkness. It also can be used to show the inner darkness of the character.   4. BLACK AND WHITE • Some thriller films are in black and white because this adds a level of eeriness and they often appear quite dark. Using black and white can also emphasises the use of shadows. When in a black and white, in small bit of colour is used, such as red for the blood, to brings a bigger effect because it brings all your focus into the blood. • Example of a thriller film that uses Black and White is: • Sin City (2005 Frank Miller)

  5. Flash backs • Flashbacks are a good way of showing a characters history. It gives the viewer a greater understanding of why the character may be acting the way they are. They can also be used to give a sense of time. It can create a time and space disorientation, which will confuse the audience. • Examples of thrillers film that uses flashbacks are: • Inception (2010 Christopher Nolan) • Déjà Vu (2006 Tony Scott)

  8. Low key lighting • Having low key lighting in a thriller film gives the audience the feeling that there is not going to be a positive outcome. If it was a beautiful sunny day, then you wouldn’t be as scared, but if it was a dim, overcast day, then it becomes a little bit eerier. • Examples of thriller movies that use low key lighting is: • Buried (Rodrigo Cortés 2010)

  11. OBSTRUSIVE EDITING • The use of quick cut editing in a thriller film keeps the pace the movie quick. They can also be used to emphasize the feeling of suspense and tension. They often used in the ‘thrilling ’ scenes, such as a chase scene. They can also create a disorientation of time and space. Montage editing can also causes this effect.
